Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator for LGBTQ Services

Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator for LGBTQ Services

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the daily implementation of drop-in center activities;
  • Identify and recruit young gatekeepers to inform and advise the enhancement of services;
  • Coordinate the implementation of community-level events and activities;
  • Conduct ongoing community assessment of Newark’s LGBT youth sub-population to inform program policies and services;
  • Coordinate and facilitate a group-level intervention utilizing a revised version of the Street Smart curriculum;
  • Coordinate and implement individual-level counseling and support services;
  • Coordinate various types of community-level outreach events that will attract clients to the youth center;
  • Prepare monthly reports to be submitted to Program Manager utilizing protocols established by the NJDOHSS/DAS;
  • Facilitate the ongoing collection of client-level data while assisting the Program Manager in the reporting of process and outcomes monitoring data, via various modes program evaluation;
  • Represent Project WOW Youth Center at various gatherings (meetings and conferences) while presenting on lessons learned and cultural-nuances, unique to LGBT youth of color at increase risk for chemical dependency;
  • Provide ongoing supervision to Substance Abuse Counselor;
  • Interact with other service providers to enhance coordination of services and referrals to the program;
  • Participate in governmental, professional and community committees and task forces, as assigned by the Manager of the Project WOW! YouthCenter;
  • Foster and preserve a strong team spirit among program staff and volunteers;
  • Coordinate and participate in client case conferences and community advisory board meetings; and
  • Provide referrals to ensure the continuum of care for clients entering into services.

Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidates will have a minimum of a Bachelors Degree and a four year demonstrated history of providing substance abuse-related services in a community-based setting.
  • The ideal candidate will be a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or Chemical Dependency Associate (CDA) and have experience working with sexual minority (LGBT) youth and young adults.
  • Candidates must be knowledgeable of the factors that place marginalized populations at increased risk for chemical dependency.
  • Candidates must be creative, motivated, work well independently and have strong teamwork skills.
  • Candidates should have great oral presentation and writing skills.
  • Candidates should possess the ability to multi-task and excel under pressure.
