Doncaster Pride 2015

Doncaster Pride is delighted to announce that the “Walk of Unity” is back for 2015! Not only a new walk route but we will be led by the banners of our local Mining Communities. We are truly grateful to all concerned for making this happen and the final amazing news is that the entire procession will be led through the streets of Doncaster by the City of Sheffield Pipe Band – brought to you by the local branch of the NUM and our local mining communities.

The Walk of Unity will start from outside Crystals on Market Place at 1.30pm (Gathering from 12.45) The City of Sheffied Pipe Band will be playing, Crystals will be open.

The route:

Market Place turn right onto Goose Hill, left onto Baxtergate foward onto St Sepulchre Gate left onto Printing Office Street right onto Cleveland Street cross at the crossing into the Waterdale Shopping Centre then straight on to Sir Nigel Gresley Square.

“WALK WITH PRIDE”

Doncaster Pride started as a small affair just 8 years ago, with a group of LGBT volunteers getting together to put on a small Pride event in Doncaster town centre.  Little did they know where this would lead, and over the years the event has grown in popularity, in partnerships and in committee members.  The charity provides support and advice for members of the public and the third sector, has developed a website which includes a chat facility, has raised funds and awareness about sexual and mental health, and celebrated various days that mark events in the LGBT calendar.

3 years ago at a pride event the committee asked Doncaster’s youth what their experience of homophobia and bullying was in Doncaster secondary schools.  The results were enough for former Treasurer Andrew Carter to propose to the committee that more work needed to be done to tackle homophobic bullying and improve LGBT inclusivity in the Doncaster curriculum.  What progressed was the long process of working with partners within Doncaster Council and others to put together a proposal that would see Doncaster’s first community led and funded LGB project worker

Doncaster Pride were able to obtain funding from ‘The Big Lottery Fund’ to appoint a project worker to provide training to schools to effectively challenge homophobic bullying and appropriately support LGBT young people both in and out of school. We are providing assistance to schools by way of staff training and student workshops and helping supporting LGBT young people in schools and making them feel safe and secure. We are also providing community help and support to those who already identify as LGBT or Questioning.

The project will also fund a series of conferences and workshops for teachers, school personnel and professionals working with children.

Advocacy

The Project also contains a community element. With this in mind, we have become more involved with working groups within Doncaster Council to provide a voice for the LGBT community.  We have been working with health partnerships, community cohesion and hate crime teams, in an attempt to improve conditions in Doncaster for LGBT people of all ages.
