The annual Cape Town Pride Festival is a celebration of our wonderful diversity, and also creates awareness around issues impacting on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities locally and throughout Africa.

Khumbulani Pride

Since 2006, with the brutal murder of Zoliswa Nkonyana, the Western Cape has experienced a spike in the number of reported cases of brutal crimes against sexual minorities, including lesbians; gays and trans- women individuals. So far there has been countless reported murders.

It also does not help that we have religious leaders who are spewing words of hate, and actually encouraging the brutality targeted towards the LGBTI community.

To thoroughly impress the seriousness of the seriousness of these crimes and to make the community aware, we have decided on the theme “Khumbula (ni)”. The theme aims to express how the community incorporating LGBT is mourning the loss and brutality targeted at sexual minorities, and to commemorate the brothers and sisters who have died senseless deaths. We also aim to use this opportunity to do community awareness and educational campaigns in collaboration with other community organizations, targeting venues and places where community members often gather or socialize.

What we hope to achieve with Khumbulani Pride:

  • What we envisage with this event is to raise awareness in these communities, and possibly raise the spirit of humanity and respect the equality of individuals and of course the respect of human life.
  • Community education does have a ripple effect, and by reaching strategic partners like churches etc. would yield positive results.
  • We also want to remind the communities that the lives that were ended abruptly, were someone’s child; brother; sister and they had their lives ahead of them.
  • Bring visibility of a united LGBTI community.
