New Orleans named one of PlanetOut's top U.S. destinations
By Cole Wakefield

The South has risen to the top of PlanetOut's Annual Travel Awards.  New Orleans was recently named runner-up as the top domestic destination.  The Crescent City shared second-place honors with gay mega-plex San Francisco and perenial favorite New York City topped the list.

The powers-that-be in New Orleans see GLBT travelers as key to the city's success.

'New Orleans has historically enjoyed its reputation as a city with an unmatched sense of southern hospitality that is open and welcome to everyone,'said Stephen Perry, President and CEO of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. 'Certainly the GLBT market is an important audience for us, and great annual events such as Southern Decadence are crucial for our hospitality industry and economic vitality,'

In 2007, New Orleans hosted 7.1 million visitors, including almost 100,000 attendees to the Southern Decadence Festival Labor Day Weekend 2007 with an estimated economic impact of $95 million. Southern Decadence Festival was started 37 years ago and has grown into one of the largest annual celebrations in New Orleans.

Thomas Roth, President of Community Marketing Inc., also praised the city for its cultural diversity.

'With an insatiable appetite for all things culture, including art, architecture, cuisine, music, festivals, etc., plus its genuine joie de vivre, there are few destinations that match what New Orleans has to offer gay and lesbian visitors,' Roth said.

'Many Sides of Nashville' featured in Passport Magazine
Top Gay Travel Mag plays up Music City
By Cole Wakefield

Nashville continues to attract attention as a destination for GLBT tourists.  The August issue of Passport Magazine, a leading voice on gay travel, features Nashville as a prime spot for a vacation.

The article was written by Rich Rubin who visited Nashville earlier this year after being invited by the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Some people might find Nashville an unusual choice, but covering Music City was an easy decision for Passport editor-in-chief Andrew Mersmann. Mersmann stated that he was 'pleasantly surprised' by the depth of Nashville's gay scene and business community.

Andrew Belonsky, editor of leading gay culture blog Queerty, also admits he was caught off guard by Nashville's diversity.

'I had no idea Nashville's culture ran so deep,' said Belonsky, 'The city has it all: music, museums and a thriving club scene.'

Increasing GLBT tourism in Nashville will benefit local businesses, gay-owned or otherwise. Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce President John Wade was pleased with how the article addressed a broad range of Nashville’s assets.

“This story could appear in any travel publication and would demonstrate to diverse demographics why Nashville would be on anyone's list of travel destinations,” said Wade, “The fact that he made the case for the gay traveler makes it all the better!”

Additional coverage of Nashville in the GLBT travel media is expected over the next few years. Local hotels, businesses, and attractions have banded together to bring more gay writers into town and reinforce Music City’s welcoming atmosphere.
