February 12 Marks 10th Anniversary of First Same-Sex Wedding in San Francisco’s Winter of Love
Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, marks the 10th anniversary of the start of San Francisco’s month long “Winter of Love,” when the City issued marriage licenses to thousands of same-sex couples in defiance of California State officials. Lawsuits and court rulings sparked by the action ultimately led to the establishment of marriage equality in California in June 2013.
Longtime activists Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were the first couple to wed during the Winter of Love; they had already been a couple for 51 years. The ceremony was conducted by then-mayor Gavin Newsom in his City Hall office.

The wedding pantsuits worn by Martin and Lyon now are on display at The GLBT History Museum in San Francisco’s Castro District. Media wishing to reproduce an image of the pantsuits will find both a basic photo and a social-media graphic below.
Media representatives preparing stories on the anniversary are invited to photograph the pantsuits at the museum or prepare video reports on location. To schedule a shoot, contact the museum’s media consultant, Gerard Koskovich, at gerard@glbthistory.org.
ABOUT THE GLBT HISTORY MUSEUM
Open since January 2011, The GLBT History Museum is the first full-scale, stand-alone museum of its kind in the United States. Currently featured in the Main Gallery is a long-term exhibition: “Our Vast Queer Past: Celebrating San Francisco’s GLBT History.” One of the displays, “Premarital Bonds: Creating Family Before Marriage Equality,” looks at ways GLBT people honored their intimate relationships from the 1940s through the 1980s. The Front Gallery and Corner Gallery spaces present changing exhibitions.
The museum is a project of the GLBT Historical Society, a research center and archives that collects, preserves and interprets the history of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and the communities that support them. Founded in 1985, the society maintains one of the world’s largest collections of GLBT historical materials. For more information, visit www.glbthistory.org.
