Following two sold-out immersive film parties for Grey Gardens, Sutton House will once again be taken over by The Amy Grimehouse for a one night only evening with the Mitford sisters including a rare screening of Nancy Mitford 1904 – 1973: A Portrait by Her Sisters (BBC, 1980).
by | 12th August 2013
Not many aristocratic families achieved celebrity status akin to the Mitfords. Nancy Mitford 1904 –1973:A Portrait by Her Sisters combines interviews with most of her sisters with footage of Nancy to address a complicated family history, giving the viewer a uniquely intimate glimpse into the aristocratic world of the Mitfords’ childhood.
Best known for the success of her books Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love, Nancy knew both penury and later success as the toast of Parisian society. In the film, we see her sister Diana confronted over charges of anti-Semitism and they discuss the impact on the family of Unity’s friendship with Hitler. This is a complex family portrait reflecting the wide range of opinions within the aristocracy at that time.
Plus, in true Grimehouse style, there will be various well-born antics in the atmospheric woodpanelled rooms of Sutton House including the Deb(o) Ball, talks, fashion, music, the Cecil Beaton studio and cocktails until midnight. A must for any lovers of the 1920s and 1930s as well as for Mitford fans.
Sutton House, 2-4 Homerton High Street, London E9 6JQ 6pm – midnight, Saturday 7th September 2013
Sutton House is close to Hackney Central and Homerton stations – both on the London Overground.
