Russia Outlines Law To Remove Children From Gay Parents

Alekei Zhuravlev, the deputy of the Russian Statement Duma has set forth a new bill, which could see gay parents having their children removed from them or losing custody of them.

Along with the gay parents, the lawmaker has also said that drug and alcohol abusers, parents with a history of physical abuse and insanity would also be included in the bill.

Mr. Zhuravlev who authored the bill said that homosexual “propaganda” had to be banned ‘in the family’ as well as in public.

The Russian LGBT Network have said in a statement on their Facebook page that Mr. Zhuravlev had prepared amendments to the Family Code, which could terminate the parental rights for people “practicing non-traditional sexual relations”.

In June President Vadamir Putin signed into a law legislation that could see anyone promoting a non-traditional relationship to anyone under the age of 18 face hefty fines and even a prison sentence.

On Tuesday 3rd September, protests were organised around the world to bring attention to violations against the LGBT community in Russia.

In the UK the protests attract several hundred people outside 10 Downing Street, who chanted “Speak Up Cameron – Gay Rights For Russia” in an attempt to pressure Prime Minster David Cameron to talk with President Putin about the violations when they meet today at the G20.

The PM has said that he will tackle Mr Putin on the issues of LGBT rights in Russia at the talks, which are being held in St. Petersburg on the 5th and 6th September
