However, for many years Croatia has been known as not the most gay friendliest country in the world. The entire world has seen the pictures of Croatian towns Zagreb and Split and the gay pride during which several people were injured just because they were brave enough to say who they are and more importantly who they love. Luckily these times are behind us and the situation has been changing rapidly. There are more and more places in Croatia that are gay friendly. Today Croatia is full of beautiful beaches and people there are usually very open and relaxed. Still Croatia does not have a real gay destination and it probably will not have for some time, but that does not mean you should not visit this Mediterranean pearl.
The gayest place in Croatia at the moment is the island of Rab. By many it is considered as the most open and there have been many talks that this island would soon start organizing exclusive gay parties. In addition, most famous places in Croatia are Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Rovinj, island of Hvar – particularly town of Hvar and Rijeka.
Kissing and hugging in public places is not recommended even if it is allowed by the law. Let us remind you that gays and lesbians here actually have more legal protections than their Italian neighbours. Nonetheless, we strongly suggest open behaviour only in gay clubs and bars.
When we opened our travel agency last summer, nobody even dared to mention, lets organise gay tours. Luckily that is not the case anymore and the situation has rapidly changed for the better. There are more and more of us that are advertising gay friendly travel, exclusive gay tours, we have partnered with several charter companies and organised very popular gay sailing tours. Let us reiterate the words of Antun Plenkovic of the Croatian National Tourist Board who said: “Croatia doesn’t have gay or straight sights…it has sights.”
