Today a federal court in San Antonio held the first-ever hearing on marriage for same-sex couples in Texas. The lawsuit, filed by two same-sex couples, seeks to overturn a constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples in Texas.

Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, released the following statement:

“A federal court in Texas heard today – as did courts in Utah and Oklahoma weeks ago, and as the U.S. Supreme Court heard last year – that there is simply no legitimate justification for denying loving couples the freedom to marry. Two of the plaintiffs, Cleopatra De Leon and Vic Holmes, served their country in the military and protected our freedoms; it is wrong that the government in Texas denies them the freedom to marry the person they love, part of every American’s liberty and pursuit of happiness. With one of the many cases across the country potentially making it to the Supreme Court as soon as 2015, we must continue to make the case, Texan to Texan, American to American, that America — all of America — is ready for the freedom to marry.”
