The Red Room no longer wants to be identified as an Austin gay bar. At least, that’s what some in the city’s gay community had to say to local news station KVUE.

The Red Room is along Austin’s “gay strip” (on W 4th St). According to this Eventbrite page, it was having a ‘Grand Opening’ event on July 19th. The invite said “Lavish is still alive, they have just been concealing it.”

“They pulled all the bartenders in the back and they said, ‘Well, we’re not going to call this a gay bar anymore, we’re going to call it a straight bar,’” former Red Room bartender Josh Moon told KVUE.

Moon claims the bar wouldn’t let gay people in that night. The owners told KVUE people were kicked out because of dress code violations. However, according to the Eventbrite invite, there was no specific dress code for men. It said “Fellas: Sports coats and ties are embraced.”No matter how it happened or why it happened… it would probably be safe to say there is now one less Austin gay bar.

By the way, this bar is not the same bar as the Red Room Lounge on 3rd St in Austin. The wine bar has, apparently, suffered some negative flak over this whole ordeal. This is what they had to say on Facebook:

…we’d never be the guys who welcomed or un-welcomed anyone for their gender, sexual preference or for their age.

We simply love everyone except the insanely disrespectful and jerkies…and sometimes we kick out hipsters who complain about entitlements and expensive wine in the best priced wine lounge in Austin.

We are not the Red Room off Lavaca… Those guys are assholes. We’re f’n cool bastards.
