WWE superstar Darren Young just officially came out of the closet in an interview with TMZ. He could not have been any more “yeah, whatever” about it. In a sport that prides itself on being chauvinistic and testosterone-driven, this is a big deal.
When the photog asked Young if he thought the WWE would accept a gay wrestler, he responded with “Absolutely. I mean, look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and, to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay and I’m happy. I’m very happy.”
You know, maybe it’s time pro-wrestling should reach out to gay fans. I mean, there are a lot of things that could appeal to the gay community.
“WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation,” said WWE in an official statement of support.
So, who is this pro-wrestler everyone’s going to be talking about over the coming weeks?
“Darren Young” is actually Fredrick Douglas “Fred” Rosser, 33. He was born in Union, New Jersey. He officially signed with WWE in 2009.
With today’s announcement, Young becomes the first wrestler to come out while signed to a major promotion.
