Dallas Black Pride has been around for 16 years, but DFW Pride Movement has only been here for the past five. It’s the “official non-profit host of Dallas Black Pride.”
The Movement Dallas Black Pride will put on its fifth annual Black Community Summit, it’s second annual career fair, and its first bowling night.
The non-profit came together as a way to build up Dallas’ African American community through social events and programs. The whole idea is to offer something different from the ‘circuit party’ scene.
I talked to the executive director of DFW Pride Movement, Derrick Spillman, as part of my “30 LGBT Leaders for 30 Years of Dallas Pride” series.
“[DFW Pride Movement’s] mission it to promote social awareness, unity, self-empowerment, mentor-ship, and positive visibility throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth LGBT community of color. We felt that was needed. It needed to be reflected in pride itself, outside of just the party. That’s where we came together to create things where we could jointly have representation throughout pride,” explained Spillman during that interview.
There will be a lot of that community-building over the weekend. Check out DFW Pride Movement‘s website for a full list of events. For instance, this sounds pretty titillating: “Fashion Meets Porn Delivery the 4-1-1 on the 9-1-1 Booty Call”
