Russian track stars Tatyana Firova and Kseniya Ryzhova kissed in front of the cameras twice after winning the 4×400-meter relay at the World Athletics Championships Saturday. They kissed first after winning the race, then again during the awards ceremony.
Some say the kiss was a protest of Russia’s anti-gay law, other say it was simply a celebratory kiss.
Neither athlete has released any sort of statement. Still, the kiss would violate the new gay propaganda law passed by Russia’s parliament.
With the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia less than six months away, there has been a lot of scrutiny of the country’s treatment of anything that could be perceived as a protest of the law.
As of yet, neither athlete is facing any repercussions for the kiss.
