The New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is seeking a Director of Development. AVP envisions a world in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and HIV-affected people are safe, respected, and live free from violence. AVP’s mission is to empower LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and support survivors through counseling and advocacy.

The Director of Development has overall responsibility for the leadership and management of all fundraising programs for AVP, ensuring that the department meets the organization’s annual goals for major gifts, institutional giving (corporate and foundation), special events and government grants. This position supervises Development Department staff and consultants and works closely with the Communications Director, Finance Director and Programs Directors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and innovative fundraising strategy, including major gifts, special events, individual giving, institutional giving and other campaigns, to ensure that AVP’s contributed income meets its annual funding objectives and upgrades and broadens its donor base.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Board leadership create individualized cultivation and stewardship strategies, timelines, and desired outcomes for donors.
  • Represent AVP and its vision to current and potential supporters and forge the necessary relationships that advance the organization’s mission through new and renewed giving at the highest levels.
  • Create and promote effective cultivation and solicitation opportunities (including communication strategies) for AVP leadership, including advising the Executive Director and Board on new and innovative means of fundraising and marketing through emerging technologies (i.e. online giving, e-mail newsletters, etc.)
  • Develop, implement, and lead all future annual endowment and capital campaigns.

General Fundraising

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts and pledges from an active portfolio of key major gift donors and prospects among individuals, corporations, foundations and government funders.
  • Maintain and manage a personal portfolio of prospects, both individual and institutional, at all times.
  • Direct and maximize the potential of AVP’s annual giving program of special events, face-to-face solicitations and mail campaign.
  • Write and edit content to be used for event invitations, direct mail solicitations, grant proposals, newsletters, thank you notes, major donor packet materials, and other fundraising avenues.

Special Events

  • Lead and oversee all special event strategy and identify new opportunities for enhancing AVP’s signature events including evaluating the potential for alternative revenue streams.
  • Work with individual event committees to meet and exceed revenue goals while maximizing attendance for each event.
  • Develop and implement strategy to secure sponsorships and sell general tickets for all special events.
  • Provide strong oversight of event expenses to maximize cost per dollar raised.

Individual Giving

  • Develop, manage and implement a multi-channel individual giving program that includes direct mail, peer-to-peer campaigns, personal solicitations, email marketing, and more.
  • Assist in diversifying AVP’s donor base (demographically and geographically).
  • Plan new and creative approaches to soliciting new donors.

Institutional Giving

  • Identify and secure corporate, foundation and government grants through the timely submission of proposals and reports to existing and new funders.
  • Cultivate relationships with corporate, foundation and government funders with the goal of creating new funding opportunities.
  • Direct the research of new funding sources.

Data analysis, research and reporting

  • Create systems for greater applicability of AVP’s database, review reports on donor engagement, Board fundraising, direct mail impact, and others as needed. Analyze fundraising activities and benchmark with peer organizations to ensure that the organization is on track.
  • Establish priorities that have the greatest return on investment.
  • Establish and achieve goals for rapid growth and milestones for progress against the plan and execute in coordination with the Executive Director and Board.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director and the Management Team the preparation of the department’s budget for revenues and expenses.

Board Engagement

  • Work with the Board to create individual and collective fundraising strategies for Board members.
  • Meet regularly with and provide support for the Board’s Development Committee.
  • Provide ongoing training and support for Board members in fundraising work.
  • Present performance reports to the Board of Directors and its relevant committees about fundraising progress.

Department-Related

  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director
  • Meet regularly with the Management Team
  • Facilitate regular Development Department staff meetings.
  • Supervise all development staff, including conducting regular evaluations, and development consultants and other related consultants and vendors.
  • Select, train, evaluate and mentor personnel reporting to this position.
  • Attend full-staff meetings.
  • Attend in-service trainings and external trainings/seminars as appropriate.

Management

  • Serve as a member of the senior management team overseeing AVP’s operations.

Administrative

  • Prepare information required by the United Way and the Better Business Bureau.
  • Document department activity in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Ensure the maintenance of complete fundraising records.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive information and situations.

Other Duties as Directed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of five years of not-for-profit experience with knowledge of “best practices” in the fundraising field with a track record of obtaining major gifts from individuals and grants from foundations and corporations.
  • Must have knowledge of Raiser’s Edge.
  • Must be an articulate and genuine spokesperson on behalf of AVP in private, public, written and oral settings.
  • Comfort working with high net worth individuals.
  • Ability to work some evenings and meet with donors in venues such as bars, restaurants and corporate offices.
  • Excellent networking skills; able to attend an event and walk away with a pocket full of business cards.
  • Keen sensitivity to human relations and ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working to end violence within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities.
  • Knowledge of LGBT and HIV-affected funding sources and philanthropic culture in New York City.
  • Commitment to working within an anti-oppression model of management, staff engagement and community engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability working effectively with board members and volunteers in the area of fundraising.
  • Must possess an entrepreneurial nature, be highly organized, even-keeled and have the willingness to roll up one’s sleeves to get the job done.
  • Experience supervising a staff and developing a spirit of teamwork.
  • A sense of humor.
  • Creativity and the ability to look “outside the box;” be solution-oriented, not problem-focused.
