Trick or treat yourself this Halloween, whether your wanting to serve up some sorcery for a crowd, spark up a supernatural dinner for your sweetheart, or just lock the door behind you with a bottle and a stack of horror dvds, here are a few ideas to get in the Halloween spirit…
INSERT RECIPE LINK TO BEEF CHILLI WITH BLACK RICE
If you’re not too fussed with Halloween then try making my beef chilli, pair it with black rice to give a Gothic nod to the occasion. It’s a definite crowd pleaser with it’s smoky chipotle flavour and unusual secret ingredient of Chinese five spice. Black rice was originally only available to royalty, not only posh but gives the dish super anti-oxidant and iron properties. It also makes a rather lovely Halloween twist. The recipe serves 4 but leftovers can be kept in the fridge, and this also freezes well.
If you are having a get together then why not try these simple Spider Eggs for canapés. They’re really easy to make, they are based on Devilled Eggs but use black olives to create spider like shapes on top. Totally moreish and brings a bit of fun to the table.
It’s all about black magic at the table. My recipe for Coal & Fire combines black quinoa coated chicken chunks (yes, they are like chicken nuggets, except these are healthy!), with a fiery red pepper dip. Packed with protein and then dunked into an anti-oxidant haven, these morsels prove you can do Halloween with an edge, and be healthy with it too.
Want an even healthier Halloween? This ridiculously easy starter doesn’t even need a recipe to follow. Simply spread houmous in a circle, grate carrot on top. Arrange pumpkin seeds / black olives to create eyes & mouth. Place spring onion at the top. Serve with desired vegetable sticks. Simple, fun, healthy.
If you are getting crafty and creative by making Jack lanterns with pumpkins. Make the most of them! See my simple recipe for Pumpkin Soup which is a bowlful of anti-oxidant power! Toast the pumpkins seeds and eat them too! The seeds are a fantastic source of iron, niacin, selenium, zinc, and are cholesterol free! (SOURCE: http://www.nutrition-and-you.com/pumpkin.html )
After witch bitching about which one of you is the next supreme, you might be ready for a bit of pud. Coffee Jelly with cream! This taps into both the pleasures of a dessert and your after dinner coffee. After a big meal this java will definitely get your mojo back! If you don’t like the idea of serving in glass tumblers then why not have a go with Prezzybox.co.uk and their brain moulds!
Prefer to skip straight to party presto? We had some fun with gin and created some cocktails in my Terrific Tanqueray piece in the drinks section.
Looking for a fabulous centrepiece that you can drink too? Then head on over to 31Dover.com, that stock a wide range of premium drinks that come in some amazing bottles, like these tequila skulls.
