Gay Fitness Feature: City Surf Fitness

photo1 300x300 Gay Fitness Feature: City Surf Fitness You live in North Texas. The nearest beach is more than a short drive away. So, you wouldn’t expect to find a group of avid surfers, would you? Well, you can… kind of… in Uptown Dallas.

City Surf Fitness has been open for a few months now, and the owners are hoping to get the gays to jump on board (pun intended).

How to describe it… Okay, picture those big exercise balls that you do sit-ups on at the gym. Shrink them down to about a foot in diameter. So, three of those are on the floor, with a surfboard on top. Now, try to stand on it. Scratch that, try to do squats on it. 10 in a row. Quickly. And that’s only the very first move in a 50-minute class of core-splitting exercise.

Yep. I signed up for that. At 6 o’clock in the morning.

Let’s just say, before the warmup was over, I was already hurting. The owners admit, there isn’t a class specifically for beginners. They want everyone to learn together, but don’t worry, they won’t look down on you if you can’t do the moves.

I mean, I sure couldn’t!

“There’s a modification for everything. You’re in here working as a group, but you don’t have to go as hard as someone who’s next to you who’s been here a bunch of times,” said co-owner Mitchell Brown.

Point taken. Don’t try to compete with a group of regular City Surfers.

As someone who always strives to stand on solid ground, standing a board that’s anything but stable took some getting used to. I’m writing this about 36 hours after my workout, and my legs still ache.

“When you’re surfing, you’re pulling those muscles. It’s bodyweight, everything like that. That’s what we’re incorporating in here that you’re not going to get doing your traditional weightlifting,” said Brown.

“This is all we, the instructors, do, and I’ve never been in better shape. I love it. I’ve got everything I need.”

Brown was my instructor when I stopped in. He’s a fit, young, encouraging instructor. He almost always said “good job” when he walked by, though I’m sure he really meant “good effort.”

Oh, Brown is straight. So, don’t get any ideas. City Surf Fitness doesn’t have any gay instructors, but the ones they have are really welcoming.

It’s a pretty intimate setting. The Uptown studio only has room for ten students at a time. If you’re interested, be sure to reserve a spot online before you show up. My class was full.

…and it was mostly women. I was there with one other guy (besides Mitch).

“I think women have just responded quicker, because they respond to group fitness quicker than guys do,” said Brown.”

But you might want to give it a shot, because this is no ‘girlie’ workout.

“A lot of guys don’t work on their legs. They’re all upper-body. This is going to force you to tone those legs with all the squatting we do. Then, it’s really going to build the shoulders and the core faster than anything,” said Brown.
