2015 QueerFilm Festival Bremen

Starting from the idea of accompanying the lesbian-gay “Herbsterwachen” to show a couple of movies, created in 1994, the Queer Film Festival Bremen. Since then, the festival takes place annually in October and as the interested public presented the local LGBTI*! Community films with queer orientation. Since its inception, the festival has become a fixture of the regional cultural landscape and has also become nationally networked: as a member of Queer Scope, an independent network of gay-lesbian festivals in Germany.

For six days, the festival presents the Bremen Municipal Cinema  City46 a diverse mix of films, documentaries and short films, which selects the volunteer team from the latest annual productions. All films are shown as premieres Bremer; if possible in the original version. The supporting program of the festival also includes discussions with directors and activists.

A special award is the Audience Award at the festival, which is awarded each year for a full-length film.

We see it as an important cultural and political order to give cinematic representations of alternative lifestyles a forum – in particular lifestyles in gay-lesbian-transgender context. The program of the queer film festival since its beginnings Bremen therefore different concept and content of the other, commercial cinemas. The festival is especially films an opportunity that found in Germany still no Rental – perhaps because they are too new; or because they are not eligible for commercial exploitation in question. This also explains the high density of premieres that characterizes the festival. In the film program as well as in the accompanying social events – round tables, exhibitions, discussions – the festival tries to take up current social debates and international developments: We want not only to inform, but to contribute to current discussions also.

The festival program is governed by a volunteer  program committee together. Especially important for us is the balance between gay, lesbian and transgender contributions; between feature films and documentaries; between German and international productions. The program is supplemented by (at least) a short film evening, thematic priority programs and classics of queer film history.
