Carleton College – Northfield, MN

The Assistant Director of the Gender and Sexuality Center ( GSC ) reports to and works collaboratively with the Director to support the mission and function of the GSC.

The Assistant Director will work with the Director to implement comprehensive student life programming relating to gender and sexuality, sexual violence prevention, sexual health education, and provide support for LGBTQA+ students.

Assistant Director, Gender and Sexuality Center

The Assistant Director serves as a resource to students. The Assistant Director manages the GSC office space, as well as GSC -affiliated student housing.

The GSC creates a dynamic campus community that supports and celebrates sexual and gender diversity and promotes healthy and safe relationships. To accomplish this, the GSC hosts events, programs, workshops and offers resources and support on LGBTQA+ issues and coordinates campus initiatives to prevent sexual violence.

The GSC works with other campus organizations and offices to strengthen and sustain an inclusive campus community that promotes gender equality and awareness and welcomes people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The Gender and Sexuality Center ( GSC ) is part of the Division of Student Life.

This is a full-time 11-month (.92) FTE position. Some evenings and weekend work is required.

Essential Job Functions – Responsibilities 

Campus Programming and Student Development

Assist with the development, implementation, and assessment of a variety of events and programs, based on co-curricular goals, to encourage thoughtful discussion, individual growth, and community building on issues related to gender and sexuality.

Coordinate peer education workshops on gender and sexual orientation diversity.

Coordinate campus-wide events such as Rainbow Retreat and Speak Up survivor speak-out.

Provide resources and support to LGBTQA+ students.

Provide multiple and varied opportunities for student engagement with issues related to gender and sexuality, intersecting identities, healthy sexuality, and sexual violence prevention.

Foster strong student leadership development through student employment and engagement opportunities.

Work collaboratively with other departments and student organizations to address continuing and emerging campus needs.

Assist with New Student Week sexual violence prevention program for all incoming students.

Advising, Supervision, and Management

Assist Director with hiring, training, professional development, and supervision of 10-15 Gender and Sexuality Center Associates (office peer leaders).

In collaboration with Residential Life, hire, train, and supervise two student House Managers.

Advise and coordinate the selection of residents for two campus houses.

Lead and provide training for the Queer Peer Mentors Program.

Support student organizations whose mission intersects with that of the GSC.

Advise students facing issues related to gender and/or sexuality, and make referrals to campus offices and resources.

Establish, maintain, and promote effective relationships with individuals, campus offices, alumni, related organizations, and external agencies.

Coordinate the daily operations of the Gender and Sexuality Center:

Manage student staffing (set work schedules, review and approve timesheets).

Manage the design and maintenance of the departmental website, social media, and publications.

Manage the operation of the GSC library resource collection, office resources, and office storage.

Process payment requests and contract management

Campus Collaborations and Consultation

Work collaboratively with academic departments and other offices to create innovate programming and initiatives to meet the goals of the Gender and Sexuality Center and the campus.

Serve as a resource for faculty and staff on student matters related to gender and sexuality.

Work alongside the Director in collaboration with Alumni Relations to build a connection to alumni.

Collaborate with Admissions in planning and implementing Accepted Student Days programming

Coordinate Carleton’s participation in the Twin Cities Pride Festival.

Attend staff retreats, meetings, and trainings as needed.

Serve on various committees and represent the Office and Division as needed.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of directly related prior experience.

Understanding of student development theory and current issues in the field of Student Affairs.

Understanding of issues related to gender and sexuality identity development, LGBTQA+ student support, and institutional climate for LGBTQA+ students.

Understanding of issues related to campus sexual violence prevention, healthy sexuality, and relationships.

Demonstrated experience with event planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues.

Demonstrated ability to act with a significant level of trust and diplomacy.

Ability to work autonomously with limited supervision.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field.

Experience supervising student staff.

Basic website design and management skills.
