American Progress has an immediate opening for the Associate Director of the LGBT Research and Communications Project.

The ideal candidate has a substantial background in issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, communities; economic or social science research methods; and policy issues related to economic opportunity and racial justice. Candidates must have proven ability to develop innovative research and policy concepts and to critically engage with intersectional analyses of LGBT concerns across issue domains.

This position combines substantive research on issues of importance to LGBT communities with rapid-response policy advocacy and communications efforts. In consultation with the Project Director and other American Progress staff, the Associate Director will drive the team’s policy objectives on both the administrative and legislative fronts, produce written reports and other materials supporting the Project’s research and policy goals, and actively coordinate efforts with other LGBT and allied organizations on the federal and state levels. The Associate Director will also manage the Project’s research portfolio on racial and economic justice

Associate Director LGBT Research and Communications Project

Responsibilities:

• Drive execution of policy strategies consistent with the LGBT Research and Communications Project’s mission and goals through extensive engagement with the executive and legislative branches of the federal government and state and local governments, as appropriate.
• Conduct research and manage research portfolio primarily on economic opportunity for LGBT communities and support the Project’s ongoing research on LGBT health, immigration, racial justice, the needs of LGBT youth, workplace discrimination, and other areas.
• Conduct analysis of federal and state policy developments as they pertain to economic opportunity and related intersectional issues—such as racial justice, LGBT youth, and workplace nondiscrimination—and draft empirically based policy solutions to meet the needs of LGBT communities.
• In consultation with LGBT Progress team staff, other American Progress departments, and external partners, develop policy strategies and objectives related to economic opportunity and related intersectional issues affecting LGBT communities.
• Produce and coordinate dissemination of original reports, briefs, columns, articles, and other materials related to LGBT economic opportunity and racial justice.
• Help plan public events and other activities to promote American Progress’ work on LGBT economic justice and other related issues.
• Represent American Progress in diverse settings, including meetings with administration and congressional policymakers, meetings with LGBT and allied organizations, media outreach, conferences, and panel discussions.
• Assist the Project Director in writing grant proposals and reports as appropriate.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in economics, public policy, sociology, or social science preferred.
• At least 5 years professional experience.
• Excellent writing and analytical skills.
• Knowledge of LGBT and related policy issues, particularly economic opportunity and racial justice.
• Experience in the LGBT advocacy movement is a plus.
• Excellent writing, research, and verbal communication skills, with a significant body of written work.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills (SPSS, SAS, Stata, or R skills required); must also be proficient in Excel.
• Extensive experience in federal and/or state policy, including both substantive content issues and legislative and administrative policymaking processes.
• Ability to develop innovative approaches to designing and implementing policy objectives and strategies.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a close-knit team.
• Ability to work well autonomously and in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
• Strong ability to communicate effectively with lay audiences, allies, and the media.
