Cape Town Gay Pride – Cape Town Pride is a 10 Day Festival to celebrate being Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer or asexual. Cape Town, SA.
Cape Town’s Pride Festival began in 2001 and then merged the following year with another local gay event. After the 2002 festival the decision was made to revert back to its original identity, and as part of the implementation of a long term strategy the 2003 festival was postponed to February 2004 in an effort to attract gay tourism to the festival and the city. The months of February and March are traditionally the period during which Cape Town sees the greatest income from tourism, and this move proved successful with a particularly well- supported festivals since 2004.
Cape Town Gay Pride 2015
Since 2006, with the brutal murder of Zoliswa Nkonyana, the Western Cape has experienced a spike in the number of reported cases of brutal crimes against sexual minorities, including lesbians; gays and trans- women individuals. So far there has been countless reported murders.
It also does not help that we have religious leaders who are spewing words of hate, and actually encouraging the brutality targeted towards the LGBTI community.
To thoroughly impress the seriousness of the seriousness of these crimes and to make the community aware, we have decided on the theme “Khumbula (ni)”. The theme aims to express how the community incorporating LGBT is mourning the loss and brutality targeted at sexual minorities, and to commemorate the brothers and sisters who have died senseless deaths. We also aim to use this opportunity to do community awareness and educational campaigns in collaboration with other community organizations, targeting venues and places where community members often gather or socialize.
What we hope to achieve with Khumbulani Pride:
- What we envisage with this event is to raise awareness in these communities, and possibly raise the spirit of humanity and respect the equality of individuals and of course the respect of human life.
- Community education does have a ripple effect, and by reaching strategic partners like churches etc. would yield positive results.
- We also want to remind the communities that the lives that were ended abruptly, were someone’s child; brother; sister and they had their lives ahead of them.
- Bring visibility of a united LGBTI community
