The Chief Development Officer serves as the senior leader who is responsible for enhancing WWH’s ability to fulfill its mission by proactively managing WWH’s overall brand in the community. The Chief Development Officer is responsible for planning and implementing an annual development plan in consultation and collaboration with the Board of Directors and the Office of the CEO. This plan outlines specific business development and diversification, fundraising, community relations, communications and marketing initiatives that support WWH’s annual strategic goals and objectives as established by the Board of Directors. The Chief Development Officer serves on WWH’s senior management team and is management’s primary liaison to the External Affairs Committee of the Board of Directors. Lastly, the Chief Development Officer serves as a strong public advocate for affirming, high quality, and culturally competent LGBT and HIV care.

Primary Essential Duties
Business Development and Diversification:
- As a critical member of WWH’s senior management team, the Chief Development Officer works closely with the CEO and Deputy Executive Director to assist WWH’s Board of Directors in setting the organization’s overall business strategy and direction.
- The Chief Development Officer actively identifies and researches new and/ or expanded opportunities that could further WWH’s mission and works collaboratively with WWH’s senior management team to formally assess such opportunities.
- The Chief Development Officer cultivates key relationships with various business leaders, government officials, and other key stakeholders to realize WWH’s business development and diversification objectives.
- The Chief Development Officer continuously learns about emerging community and business trends in the local health care marketplace to better inform new / expanded services, products, and campaigns. Fundraising:
- The Chief Development Officer oversees the planning and implementation of WWH’s annual fundraising plan including but not limited to special events, major donor events, social marketing solicitations and/or direct mailings.
- The Chief Development Officer actively leads WWH’s development team comprised of employees and outside consultants with the annual goal of exceeding WWH’s gross and net fundraising targets.
Community Relations:
- The Chief Development Officer oversees WWH’s community relations function including assessing third party invitations for WWH to participate in specific external events and planning, implementing and staffing WWH-sponsored activities.
- The Chief Development Officer actively participates in specific outside events and, as a senior leader, represents WWH in a professional and respectful manner at all times.
Communications:
- The Chief Development Officer oversees WWH’s communications efforts with the goal of offering the community an impactful, mission-based brand message for WWH throughout the year.
- The Chief Development Officer serves as one of a small number of WWH’s spokesperson and is expected to participate in a variety of public interviews throughout the year.
Marketing:
- The Chief Development Officer oversees WWH’s advertising and marketing efforts which include the direct supervision of WWH employees and outside consultants.
- The Chief Development Officer provides specific marketing advice, counsel and support to WWH’s programmatic departments consistent with WWH’s annual operating goals and priorities.
Budget Responsibilities
- Approves the budgets of all direct reports and assures on-going budget compliance.
Management Responsibilities
Direct Reports include:
- Director of Annual Giving
- Director of Major Gifts
- Director of Communication
- Director of Community Relations
- Senior Director of Policy
Knowledge, Skills, and Talents Required
- Demonstrated knowledge of practices, policies and procedures related to business development and fundraising, including specific knowledge of the laws and regulations governing these areas.
- Strong knowledge of general protocols and practices related to the provision of healthcare services, including specific knowledge of current governing laws and regulations.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to meet with and persuasively engage government, business, community and non-profit leaders.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to build working relationships with community partners, corporate donors and other important individuals.
- Proven management skills, including the ability to direct and supervise a diverse staff of individuals providing development, communications and community relations support.
- Active knowledge of and experience with LGBT and HIV communities in metropolitan Washington, DC area.
- Demonstrated ability with strategic planning, budgeting and goal setting.
- Strong organization and follow-through skills, able to prioritize multiple projects.
- Ability to relate to a variety of individuals and has a track record of being a team player.
- Ability to work collaboratively internally and externally.
- Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Business, Communications, Community Relations or similar field preferred.
- At least 8 (eight) years of progressively responsible experience in business development
- Leadership and managerial expertise with at least (5) five years of managerial experience
