Communications Intern – Join the fight for marriage equality

Equality Florida – Saint Petersburg, FL

Equality Florida (www.eqfl.org) is currently looking for students that want to make a difference in the fight for marriage equality. We are seeking 3-5 interns in the Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater area to assist in the collection of stories to be used as part of our “Get Engaged” initiative (www.imengaged.org). Stories will help spread the word through social media and other communications activities.

Interns will be expected to spend approximately 5 hours a week for a minimum of 12 weeks talking with Floridians and writing stories about why same-sex marriage matters to them. The majority of work can be done from your home on your own schedule. Training and ongoing support will be provided. Opportunities to support other community outreach projects are also available.

We are looking for people that:

Enjoy meeting and talking to new people.
Have a natural passion for writing.
Are organized and able to meet deadlines on a regular basis.

Students can come from any major, but this internship would be ideal for those studying communications, journalism, public relations, writing, marketing or public policy and social change.

This is the perfect opportunity to improve your interviewing and writing skills along with developing a portfolio of articles and stories to help you land your dream job down the road.

Interns will report directly to a supervisor who will mentor interns and oversee their progress each week.

This is an unpaid internship. You are not required to take course credit to be eligible.

Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Through lobbying, grassroots organizing, education, and coalition building, we are changing Florida so that no one suffers harassment or discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

TO APPLY:
Email your resume along with a brief cover letter and any relevant writing samples

“Lobby Days with Equality Florida was a transformational experience for me. I got the chance to play a direct role in pushing state senators and representatives for progressive policy in Tallahassee that had a direct impact on my life as a gay Floridian.”
– Carlos, 2011 Public Policy intern and organizer of Lobby Days.

We are in need of energized and dynamic young leaders to become a part of the work being done across the state to create a fair and safe environment for all Floridians, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Equality Florida is currently looking for students from all fields of study and backgrounds to fill internship positions in our Field, Public Policy, Communications and Development departments. Each intern will report directly to a supervisor whom will oversee internship projects, assignments and tasks on a daily basis. Prospective interns will be interviewed and selected by the Field, Public Policy, Communications, and/or Development Director respectively.

What’s in it for You?

The movement towards LGBT equality cannot be won overnight. If we are to reach our goals it is imperative that we support and foster leadership in those who will continue the fight. As an EQFL Intern, students will learn the basic and advanced skills needed to become effective grassroots organizers. Our interns are an important part of the Equality Florida family and each intern takes on tasks and projects that directly aide in achieving Equality Florida’s mission.

Field Interns will be primarily involved in outreach to the community as well as volunteer management and coalition building.

Public Policy Interns will work on our local and state electoral programs as well as our legislative agenda.

Communication Interns will participate in our social media outreach including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Development Interns will work with our fundraising staff to manage donor relations and produce fundraising events.

Get Engaged Interns will help grow support for the freedom to marry in Florida by attending events, contacting local and statewide officials, collecting stories and data entry. Our Get Engaged Coordinator, Jennie, is based in St. Petersburg. It is helpful to have interns who are also based in the area, but it is not a requirement.

Our internship requires a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per week and ideally would be for school credit. Outstanding applicants who wish to do the internship without school credit will be considered. Please note, if you are not located near one of our offices, if selected as an intern, you will be required to work remotely.

How to Apply

Please submit a resume and one page cover letter stating which internship you are interested in, the semester and calendar months for which you are applying. The cover letter should also include information about why you would like to work as an Equality Florida intern and what you hope to gain from your work with us. Applicants can include information on past political/organizing experiences though it is not required.
