The Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit legal and educational organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, seeks a community advocate to join our litigation and advocacy work focused in the Deep South. The advocate will mainly support our LGBT Rights Project.

The LGBT Rights Project litigates some of the most compelling cases in the country. We currently represent victims of fraudulent “conversion therapy” practices in New Jersey, a child born with an intersex condition and required to undergo needless sex-reassignment surgery by the State of South Carolina, a lesbian high-school student standing up to small-town school administrators who told her they don’t want a “dyke” in their school, and a widower seeking to overturn Alabama’s refusal to recognize his marriage to his late husband.

Community Advocate LGBT Rights Project

The advocate will work collaboratively in a fast-pasted practice. The advocate will help create, carry out, or support multifaceted campaigns that may include policy work; community organizing; public education including public speaking, writing informational materials, or media campaigns; extensive communications with current and prospective clients including identifying and engaging clients and maintaining an organized intake system for those seeking assistance; building and maintaining positive relations with local and national community partners; and field investigations. Substantial travel will be required as well as extended and weekend hours, at times.

Applicants should have a strong commitment to advancing the rights of LGBT people with excellent writing, communication, presentation, and organizational skills together with willingness to learn and use internal computer systems and databases. This position requires consistent follow-through and flexibility around changing priorities and deadlines with an ability to work on several cases at once and take direction from several attorneys. An ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership ability so as to inspire confidence by potential clients, members of the public, and community partners. An ability to engage with people with compassion and sensitivity, often youth, from a variety of backgrounds, is important – as is an ability to work at times with minimal supervision. Applicants should have a college degree and at least two years of relevant experience. Experience in community organizing or running campaigns is especially welcome, as is Spanish proficiency.

This position will be based in our central office in Montgomery, Alabama. SPLC will pay reasonable relocation costs.
