DC Latino Pride 2015
Our mission is to investigate, collect, preserve and educate the public about the history, culture, heritage, arts, social and rich contributions of the Latino GLBT community in metropolitan Washington, D.C. To accomplish our mission, the LHP creates educational exhibits from our historical archives collection showcased at cultural events such as, a Women’s History Month Reception, a Hispanic LGBTQ Heritage Reception and DC Latino Pride, educational presentations at local and national conferences and through our online virtual museum at www.LatinoGLBTHistory.org.
To accomplish our mission the Board of Directors of the Latino GLBT History Project annually convenes a group of talented and diverse individuals with a variety of skill sets to form a Planning Committee for each of its major educational and cultural projects, programs, presentations and community events. The mission of each committee is to host quality cultural and educational events to celebrate the identities and cultural diversity of LGBT Latinas/os and educate the public on the history of LGBTQ Latinos in DC. We place an emphasis on preserving our history so we may learn from our past in order to empower us to make a positive impact for the future in our community.
The combination of our working board and planning committees comprised of bilingual professionals and community organizers carry out the work of the completely volunteer-led organization. Each program and event is run by a volunteer planning committee. Our largest annual event, DC Latino Pride has a planning committee and subcommittee structure that includes 35 volunteers in various roles. Each subcommittee is chaired by a member of the board of directors. Programs are in Spanish and English and developed in partnership with key government agencies and non-profits to connect attendees with HIV testing and social service resources.
