Immigration Equality is proud to be the national leader in the field we pioneered: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV immigration rights. Founded in 1994, we have a dual focus of direct legal representation and policy advocacy for LGBT asylum seekers and detainees. We work to ensure that LGBT immigrants living in the U.S. from fundamentally unsafe countries have a fair shot at obtaining asylum or relief from removal. We challenge the dangerous detention conditions for LGBT immigrants. We helped end the HIV travel ban and led the successful fight to secure green cards for LGBT couples and families. We also take calls every day from vulnerable people who need help right now, answering over 4,000 hotline calls and representing nearly 500 individual cases each year.
In 2015 and beyond, we are doubling down on our asylum and detention advocacy. In over 80 countries it is a crime to be gay, and being out or being outed is life-threatening. That’s why we work to train, represent and hold accountable the government officials who make life-or-death decisions for LGBT people seeking safety in the U.S. We are proud to do life-saving work and fight the systems that hurt our families.
