The Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity (RCSGD) provides a wide range of services and programs to serve the needs of self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer, two-spirit, questioning, intersex, and queer students, faculty, and staff. The RCSGD is a semi-autonomous program of the Women’s Center, with its own space and specific resources. The RCSGD plays an important role in creating a welcoming space for LGBTQ individuals and allies while advocating for a healthy and inclusive climate across campus.

Oversees all components of the Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity and LGBT Services, under the general direction of the Women, Gender, and Sexual Equity Director. Assesses campus needs and develops services to best meet those needs, as well as manages personnel, budgets, resources, and programs. Increases campus awareness of LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Ally) issues to create a safe climate for the community. Serves as an advocate, coordinator and University spokesperson for all campus-wide LGBTQIA issues related to students, staff, and faculty.

Director of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Resources

Minimum Requirements 

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of years of experience. Demonstrated leadership experience working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Ally (LGBTQIA) communities; Experience managing budget, programs, and personnel; Ability to develop strong collaborative relationships; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Understanding of intersections of LGBT concerns and issues related to race, class, gender, nationality, and disability.

Demonstrated knowledge of LGBTQIA identity development and issues in a higher education setting; Knowledge of current policy/law related to LGBTQIA issues in higher education; Educational and/or work experience in Counseling, Social Work, or Student Affairs; Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Ability to work in a team and to build coalitions and partnerships; At least 2-3 years supervision and management experience.

Desirable Requirements 

Masters or Ph.D. in a related field, such as Cultural or Ethnic Studies, Education, or Sociology, with an emphasis in Ability, Class/Socioeconomic Status, Gender, Race/Ethnicity, and Sexuality.

University Representation 

  • Advises and assists campus administrators and departments on implementation of policies and procedures regarding LGBTQIA issues, resources, and services.
  • Campus resource regarding University policies, procedures, benefits and regulations affecting the LGBTQIA community.
  • Spokesperson to media regarding LGBTQIA issues.
  • Campus expert regarding all services available and of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, legal, and social realities related to the LGBTQIA community.
  • Networks with local, system-wide, state and national LGBT centers and organizations.
  • Develops fundraising activities including benefit events, planned giving, research and writing of appropriate grant proposals to public and private agencies for LGBTQIA projects.
  • Conducts research relevant to LGBTQIA issues and produce presentations and publications
  • Consults with administrative departments regarding institutional response to LGBTQIA concerns.

Administration 

  • Oversees all LGBTQIA services which include creating and implementing educational workshops for a variety of audiences, outreach to prospective students, advocating for individuals facing obstacles on campus, proactively and actively responding to hate and bias incidents, and creating and implementing educational and social programming.
  • Oversees all operations of the only campus-wide Resource Center providing services for LGBTQIA students, staff, faculty and community.
  • Develops, interprets, implements and evaluates short-term and long-term goals and objectives of LGBTQ services; creates strategic goals and directions for the Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity and establishes necessary policies and procedures.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, evaluates and supervises Program Coordinator, student staff, and volunteers of LGBT Services.
  • Creates and maintains functioning network of existing groups, organizations, and departments that serve the LGBTQIA community.
  • Assesses student, staff and faculty needs and acts as the principal assistant to higher level student affairs officers and campus consultants on retention improvement and campus climate for LGBTQIA students, staff and faculty.
  • Develops communication strategies and manages information systems including databases, list-serves, social networks, and web pages.
  • Completes strategic and annual planning, conducts regular and annual assessment projects, and prepares annual reports.
  • Manages the Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity budget, as well as seeks venues for additional funding and resources.
  • Maintains relationships with on-campus departments and off-campus agencies for training and resource sharing purposes.
  • Maintains up-to-date library resources and coordinates with academic units in order to include resources reflecting current research and issues.
  • Coordinates annual Lavender Graduation & Awards Ceremony, including the facilitation of the campus-wide awards process (coordinates committee, call for nominations, establishes selection criteria, prepares awards, etc.).
  • Performs other duties as appropriate to the level of position as assigned.

Education 

  • Assesses campus climate and researches national and global issues in order to create programs and information to educate the campus.
  • Informs campus community of all UCSB and community services available regarding LGBTQIA.- Designs, implements, and/or supports social, cultural, wellness, and educational programs to educate the campus community around LGBTQIA issues and raise campus awareness regarding the effects of sexism, homophobia, heterosexism, biphobia, and transphobia.
  • Serves as liaison to faculty regarding mentorship, academic programming, research opportunities, curriculum research and development, conferences and colloquia.
  • Ongoing collaboration with Feminist Studies Department regarding LGBTQ studies minor.
  • Provides support, training, and guidance to student and staff organizations.
  • Provides guidance, consultation, and leadership development opportunities to student organizations, and provides structured resources to student organization advisors.
  • Consults with Assistant Judicial Affairs Coordinator (Hate Incidents Response Coordinator) on hate incident cases and campus educational needs.
  • Maintains awareness of local, state and federal hate crime laws.
  • Works with local and campus police departments on training needs and developing, maintaining and presenting crime prevention information.
  • Acts as advisor to Residential Life and Dean of Students conduct systems in cases of hate crimes and assists with coordinated responses.
  • Serves as a co-chair of EUCALYPTUS.
  • Serves as advisor and resource specialist to assist students with issues affecting their academic progress, identity development, and experience of campus life.
  • Oversees coordination of speakers’ bureau to include recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of speakers.
  • Develops, produces and updates educational materials.
  • Develops campus and community outreach programs including development of all publicity materials.
  • Conducts climate survey, evaluates data and prepares action plans.

Crisis Intervention 

Creates and disseminates proactive approaches to preventing and responding to hate crimes, hate incidents, and bias incidents for campus and community members.

  • Serves as advisor, consultant and liaison to all campus departments regarding LGBTQIA issues.
  • Provides direct service to students, staff, and faculty which can include crisis intervention, assessment and referral, support, guidance, liaison to other resources, information, and advocacy, as well as non-crisis consultation and assistance.
  • Serves as a resource person who can provide assistance and advice to students regarding specific types of student grievances, including alleged discrimination and harassment, based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
  • Provides case management for each client contact: coordinate with relevant on- and off-campus agencies, i.e. Police, Counseling Center, Student Health Services, Equal Opportunity Program, Residential Life, Dean of Students, and academic departments.
