Lambda Legal‘s Education and Public Affairs Department seeks college and high school students for internship positions year round. This is an opportunity for students to gain hands-on outreach and/or communications experience at a national nonprofit organization specializing in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV civil rights law.
Lambda Legal provides a pleasant, collegial environment for students interested in law, LGBT issues, civil rights, organizing and/or nonprofit workplaces. Interns must be able to work 16 to 24 hours per week between 9:30 am and 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Education and Public Affairs Internships
Application
Applicants should send a resume, cover letter and 1 to 2 page writing sample to etablada@lambdalegal.org. The cover letter should include the applicant’s hours of availability for the semester/term and the phone numbers and titles of two references.
The title of the position (Community Education, Communications or Editorial) and location (NYC, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, LA) MUST appear in the subject line of your email. Lambda Legal accepts interns on a continual basis.
We consider the positions open until filled. Generally, applications received by September 1st (fall), November 30th (spring) and March 15th (summer) are guaranteed consideration for the next semester/term. Selections are made as the applicant pool allows and continue until all spaces are filled. Please specify location and semester/term for which the application is being submitted.
Compensation
As this is a nonpaying position, applicants are strongly encouraged to seek out and apply for grants from their school or other sources.

Community Education Interns
Location: National Headquarters, New York; Atlanta; Chicago; Dallas; Los Angeles
Responsibilities
The Community Education Intern will be responsible for event planning, press development, community outreach, public education and administrative tasks. This internship is unpaid; however course credit and externship status are available. Interns are strongly encouraged to seek out and apply for grants, scholarships or funding from other sources.
Qualifications
Interns will assist staff members in combating all areas of sexual orientation and HIV discrimination. Thus, a background in or familiarity with issues, legal and otherwise, important to LGBT and people with HIV will greatly strengthen the application.
Candidates for the internship should have a strong commitment to social justice, equality and civil rights issues, particularly those involving LGBT and HIV-affected communities. In addition, a desire to learn, strong writing and analytical skills and proficiency in web-based research are a plus.
Proyecto Igualdad
Location: Los Angeles
Proyecto Igualdad extends Lambda Legal’s resources and information to Spanish speakers and seeks to engage the many Latino/Hispanic communities. We provide bilingual educational materials, host community events and trainings and offer bilingual legal assistance through our Help Desks around the country.
Qualifications
Spanish language fluency a plus. Interns will assist Proyecto Igualdad’s Coordinator in combating all areas of sexual orientation, gender identity and HIV/AIDS discrimination. Candidates for these internships should have a strong commitment to social justice, equality and civil rights issues and should be enthusiastic about increasing and protecting the civil rights of LGBT people and people with HIV. In addition, a desire to work hard and learn, communications and analytical skills, and attention to detail are required, as well as proficiency in web-based research.
Responsibilities
The Proyecto Igualdad Interns will be responsible for Latino and Latino LGBT community outreach, public education, events coordination, publication distribution, data entry and other administrative tasks relating to LGBT relationship recognition, family rights and marriage equality; workplace rights; judicial independence; civil rights issues for people with HIV; and youth and school rights.
Communications Interns
Location: National Headquarters, New York
Responsibilities
Duties may include some of the following:
- Research media outlets and organizations and contacts for input into database
- Upkeep of media clipping files
- Assembling media packets
- Participating in public education and community outreach events
- Coordinate participation in summer pride events
- Helping to distribute publications
- Transcribing taped interviews
- Proofreading and light copy editing
- Data entry
- Some writing for Lambda Legal’s print and online publications
- Light HTML
- Copying and filing; and other administrative tasks
Qualifications
A familiarity with issues that are important to LGBTQ and people with HIV is not necessary but will strengthen an application. Interns must be detail-oriented, well-organized and comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
Editorial Internship
Location: National Headquarters, New York
Lambda Legal’s Education and Public Affairs Department seeks college students for a summer internship in our New York City national headquarters. This is an opportunity for undergraduates to gain hands-on editorial experience at a national nonprofit organization specializing in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV civil rights law.
Responsibilities
This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain solid experience in a busy editorial department. Duties may include some of the following:
- Some writing for Lambda Legal’s triannual publication, Impact, as well as other print publications
- Some interviewing and reporting
- Research and fact checking
- Proofreading and light copy editing
- Photo research
- Filing, copying and other organizational tasks
Qualifications
We are seeking ambitious juniors and seniors with strong writing and editing skills (grammar geeks especially encouraged to apply). A familiarity with issues that are important to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and people with HIV is not necessary but will strengthen an application. Interns should be comfortable working independently and as part of a team and have some experience with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
