Implement, coordinate and develop the GED and postsecondary education programming for LGBT young adults, aged 17 to 24 years, at the Youth Center on Highland.
Education Center Coordinator Los Angeles LGBT Center
Work with clients to develop their individualized education plans including GED, high school, postsecondary education enrollment, and life skills planning; facilitate direct education services for youth that includes conducting interviews and assessments, developing lesson plans, assigning lessons, tutoring clients, grading tests, and administering action plans.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1) In collaboration with the education team, develop, implement and coordinate the GED and postsecondary education programming at the Youth Center on Highland;
2) Work with clients to develop their individualized education plans including GED, high school, postsecondary education enrollment, and life skills planning; facilitate direct education services for youth that includes conducting interviews and assessments, developing lesson plans, assigning lessons, tutoring clients, grading tests, and administering action plans;
3) Develop postsecondary educational programming specific to individual youth plans; provide and coordinate college preparation and support that includes individual college counseling, aptitude assessment, college research, campus tours, class auditing, scholarship exploration, obtaining transcripts, assisting with college registration and application processes, applying for financial aid, assisting with the scheduling of coursework, and providing tutoring and continued support;
4) Provide wrap around support and resources to clients to help ensure all aspects of their education plans are followed and provide feedback as required;
5) Arrange and oversee educational field trips, visiting speakers, education groups and other activities;
6) Recruit, train, schedule and support volunteers to ensure full tutor coverage during all open hours;
7) Track data and indicators for client enrollment participation and progress; monitor individual client and program performance to ensure that deliverables are being met; prepare reports as required and ensure that they are accurate, complete and submitted on time;
8) Participate in internal and external meetings to promote community collaboration, to stay fully aware of the current education landscape and to identify opportunities for the education program and youth;
9) Maintain and develop a youth alumni program to provide both support for and connection with youth who have graduated from the program;
10) Be willing to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends and evenings;
11) Other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
1) A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an educational environment as an instructor, tutor or counselor;
2) A minimum of 1 year experience in a social service or related setting;
3) Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting gay & lesbian youth, including experience working with homeless and high risk youth (specific work with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and/or runaway youth a plus) required;
4) Excellent computer skills including word processing, database operations, spreadsheets, and other software systems;
5) Good verbal and written communication skills, including strong organizational, detail and interpersonal skills;
6) Leadership skills as evident by ability to work independently and coordinate the successful completion of projects;
7) Demonstrated ability to work effectively with men and women of diverse backgrounds including age, gender, sexual orientation, education, language and ethnicity, in a multicultural environment;
8) Bilingual Spanish/ English preferred.
TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE:
1) 4-6 years of experience in Arts, Education, Psychology, Behavioral Science, or equivalent education required;
2) Valid California Driver’s License and a clean DMV record (ability to obtain Insurance);
3) Current CPR certificate.
