Big Apple Performing Arts serves as an umbrella organization that provides resources and coordinates LGBT+ identified performing groups. Within these groups, members unite to entertain, educate, and advocate through the power of the performing arts.
Big Apple Performing Arts is home to the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus and the Youth Pride Chorus, which are members of GALA Choruses.

Through the current success of its existing performing groups, New York City Gay Men’s Chorus and Youth Pride Chorus, the Big Apple Performing Arts (BAPA) is now in a position of commercial stability, buoyant ticket sales, membership expansion and a reputation for artistic excellence and innovation locally, nationally and internationally. We are now confidently building on this solid foundation by seeking to expand capacity. Therefore, the Board of Directors of BAPA is seeking an Executive Director who will lead a significant expansion of the organization over the next 5 years. BAPA recently adopted a new strategic plan with goals to substantially increase its administrative and artistic capacity to help grow the LGBT+ performing arts in New York. We are seeking an Executive Director who will lead the BAPA in creating, promoting, and supporting the growth of cutting-edge performing arts groups and in developing both an organizational and physical home for the LGBT+ performing arts.
The Executive Director will be expected to double BAPA’s income by 2020 through significant growth of its audience and ticket sales and through greater fundraising powered by newly developed infrastructure and greater Board capabilities. The ED will also need to create a comprehensive audience development plan built on market analysis, new marketing infrastructure, and enhanced use of digital marketing to support growth in the number of performances of the existing choral groups while adding new performing arts groups to BAPA’s roster. In addition, the ED will need to find ways to improved BAPA’s physical resources, including the use of digital media to allow BAPA’s performing groups to innovate and broaden their outreach and impact on the nonLGBT+ community in New York Through this growth, BAPA will be able to provide enhanced opportunities for the artistic expression of its members and broaden the impact they have on the community at large.
To accomplish these goals, BAPA is looking for an Executive Director who will build and lead a team which has responsibility for the following elements of the Strategic Plan:
ART — Oversee the development of BAPA performing groups that create high quality, innovative, cutting-edge, and exciting performances that have the power to change lives and help them develop their unique identities and reach their full potential.
OUTREACH/ADVOCACY/EDUCATION — Lead BAPA’s efforts to ensure that performing groups connect with diverse communities—reflecting the broadest range of race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and age—to empower, educate, and advocate for change.
FINANCIAL — Lead BAPA in maintaining a sound financial position to support organizational growth through increased income, carefully managed investments, and sound financial operations.
DEVELOPMENT/FUNDRAISING — Expand BAPA’s diversified development program and family of givers that allows it to be financially secure and achieve the artistic and programmatic goals of its member groups
EXTERNAL RELATIONS/COMMUNICATIONS (MARKETING & PUBLIC RELATIONS) — Oversee incisive and intelligent campaigning, revitalization of brand identity, an established social media presence, a comprehensive marketing and audience development plan resulting in increased earned income so BAPA is recognized as a leading LGBT+ performing arts organization in New York City
VENUES/FACILITIES/PRODUCTION (PERFORMANCE & ADMINISTRATIVE) — Oversee BAPA’s development of a home and performance venues that reflect its mission, values, and products; support the production needs of its performing groups; support its staffing and membership needs; and reinforce its reputation as the premier LGBT+ performing arts organization in New York City.
HUMAN RESOURCES — Oversee BAPA’s staffing structure and ensure qualified staff in place to achieve its goals, including artistic endeavors, outreach, marketing, development, and financial growth and stability.
GOVERNANCE — Work with BAPA’s diverse leadership, including the Board of Directors, that complements key areas of the strategic plan, and serves as a model for LGBT+ performing arts organizations while supporting the evolution of its governance structure in ways that support its expanded mission.
MEMBERSHIP — Ensure BAPA performing groups build, support, and maintain a family of diverse members that are committed to excellence and equality and serve as role models in the LGBT+ community.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES – Maintain appropriate administrative systems and structures to manage the needs of the both BAPA and its member groups.
OVERALL QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of five years of successful organizational leadership in the performing arts world with the demonstrated ability to grow the organization and help it adapt to changing circumstances.
- Demonstrated ability to build, maintain and lead a team of individuals with diverse areas of expertise including artistic, production, administrative and technical.
- Demonstrated ability to raise major individual gifts, including soliciting contributions directly and managing the solicitation strategies.
- The ability to work in a collaborative, productive manner with a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to build, maintain and grow a wide array of relationships across multiple areas of expertise.
- Effective at communicating the goals and work of a performing arts organization in an array of settings.
- Excellent skills in time management and creative problem solving.
- Ability to build and sustain working relationships and convey a professional demeanor to external constituencies.
- Effective writing and communications skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Desire to work in a fast-paced and mission driven organization.
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree.

Salary & Benefits:
Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The Executive Director should be available to assume responsibilities for this full-time, New York City-based position as soon as possible.
