OutCenter – Benton Harbor, MI
The OutCenter Board is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Executive Director to build the organization’s fundraising capacity in ways that effectively support mission-based programs and operations. Now uniquely positioned to play a larger role in creating change, the OutCenter provides direct services, as well as works collaboratively in innovative partnerships in ways that broaden and deepen mission-based impacts.
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive and operating officer of the OutCenter, working closely with and reporting to, the Chair and the Board of Directors. The Executive Director directs and administers all programs, operations and policies in addition to supervising a small corps of Board members, volunteers, consultants and interns.
Executive Director OutCenter
Primary areas of responsibility include:
- Fund Development/Grant Oversight and Fiscal Management – together with the Board and Fund Development Committee, develops and manages the fundraising and financial strategies of the organization; develops an annual budget for approval by the Board; oversees the management of all funds, consistent with the organization’s accounting system and software (QuickBooks).
- Community Relations and Strategic Partnerships – develops effective working relationships across the tri-county area to ensure that LGBT people and need for equality are heard and understood.
- Program Development and Management – develops, implements and supervises programs and services that are consistent with the organization’s mission and that meet the needs of constituents, while also advancing change toward LGBT equality.
- Community Leadership and Volunteer Management – motivates and develops the Board, intern, consultant and volunteer team; hires, supervises and evaluates interns, consultants and volunteers; coordinates work with the Board’s committees and partner organizations.
- Advocacy – serves as the chief spokesperson for the OutCenter in the community; articulates and communicates the value of LGBT people, their contributions to and participation in the broader society, with a focus on diversity and the role social justice approaches can have in establishing equality for LGBT people, and promotes community support of the OutCenter.
- Ethics and Integrity – conducts all interactions and transactions at the highest standard of ethics and integrity.
- Strategic Planning – develops and implements the organization’s fundraising and annual organization development plans in conjunction with the Board and Fund Development Committee.

- Ability to respond to immediate need and carry out operations and programs in context of a sustainability and long range plan that posits the OutCenter in an active and highly visible role in Southwest Michigan and across the state.
- Effective prioritization of goals and time management, communicating plans for work in a timely and accountable manner.
- Ability to delegate work to appropriate Board members, consultants, interns and volunteers.
- Encourages leadership and accountability from strategic partners, Board members, consultants, interns and volunteers.
- Inspires commitment, engagement and support from donors, strategic partners, Board members, consultants, interns and volunteers.
- Understands and is excited about relationships with donors, strategic partners, Board members, consultants, interns, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- College graduate with at least 5 years leadership and management experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization, with significant experience in social justice areas.
- Prior experience as Executive Director is preferred.
- Knowledge of the LGBT equality movement and Southwest Michigan is a plus.
- Proven record as a successful fundraiser.
- Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong planning, organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to positively motivate, build consensus, and develop board, consultants, and volunteers.
- Visionary and innovative thinker.
- Ability to work collaboratively with business, government and nonprofit sectors of the community, and understand how to build productive strategic partnerships locally and on a state-wide level.
