These are our highlights from the first major Movie and TV Awards Ceremony of the year that took place last night at the Beverley Hills Hilton in Los Angeles. The Globes are awarded by the powerful Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are generally regarded as an accurate barometer for the even more prestigious OSCARS that will be announced next month.
British actress JOANNE FROGGATT won the first Golden Globe of the evening for Best Supporting Actress In A Series, Mini-Series Or TV Movie for her role as Anna Bates in ‘DOWNTON ABBEY’. Tradition has it that the Award is presented by last year’s winner Jacqueline Bissett another Brit, who as Globe watchers will never forget, was more than a few sheets to the wind when she staggered up the podium last January. As she was nowhere in sight this year, we were worried if she was still stuck in the Bar.
Out gay actor MATT BOMER who the won Best Supporting Actor Award for his portrayal in HBO’s adaptation of ‘THE NORMAL HEART’ acknowledged the victims of HIV/AIDs. “To the generation we lost and the people we continue to lose to this disease I just want to say we love you, we remember you,” Bomer said. He also thanked director Ryan Murphy, playwright Larry Kramer and his publicist husband Simon Halls, who stuck with him even when he weighed 130 pounds for the role.
JILL SOLOWAY the creator of the groundbreaking series on Amazon called ‘TRANSPARENT’ about a transgender woman coming out to her family accepted the Golden Globe for Best Television Series. In her speech Soloway acknowledged the inspiration of her own father who had transgendered when he was in his sixties, and then very emotionally dedicated the Award to the memory of LEELAH ALCORN a trans teen who committed suicide in December
The wonderful veteran actor JEFFREY TAMBOR deservedly won Best Actor in a TV Series, Comedy for starring as Maura in ‘TRANSPARENT’. Tambor took the opportunity to say, “I would like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community. Thank you for your inspiration, thank you for your patience and thank you for letting us be a part of the change.”
KEVIN SPACEY picked up the Best Actor in a TV Drama Award for his role in ‘THE HOUSE OF CARDS’, his first Golden Globe after being nominated seven times previously. As a celebrated ‘confirmed bachelor’ his very dramatic acceptance speech didn’t finish with the customary thanks to a wife or partner. Spacey’s ‘date’ for the event was KATE MARA one of his co-stars who used to be MAX MINGHELLA’S girlfriend, but who is certainly not like some innocent blogger suggested, Mr. Spacey’s new squeeze.
Actress RUTH WILSON from Ashford Kent won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series for the TV series ‘THE AFFAIR’ in which she co-stars with fellow Brit DOMINIC WEST who was also nominated for an Award too. The series also picked up the Award for Best Television Drama Series.
The most adorable winner however was Brit EDDIE REDMAYNE who’s stunning performance as STEPHEN HAWKING in ‘THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING’ earned him the big prize of the night ‘BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE DRAMA’. A blushing Redmayne announced that he had married his fiancée Hannah Bagshawe just two weeks ago, and this was the last night of their honeymoon.
Redmayne now looks like the leading candidate for winning the Oscar too and we are keeping all our digits crossed for him now.
We simply couldn’t sign off our report without naming our pick for the Best Dress of the night. It was an easy decision to make as the very clear winner was NAOMI WATTS wearing a stunning yellow Gucci .
