Grimsby Pride – Grimsby, England

Creating Equality, Celebrating Diversity in and around North East Lincolnshire.

Grimsby Pride 2014

Grimsby Pride 2014‘Grimsby Pride’ is the trading name for a committee called ‘North East Lincolnshire Pride’. The committee organise and hold an annual event to celebrate the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in North East Lincolnshire and surrounding areas. As well as a celebration, the event raises awareness of the LGBT community and provides support for people, by offering a range of outlets where anyone can access and gain advise surround the subject.

Building on the platform from four previous pride events held in North East Lincolnshire, we hope to pursue the integration of the LBGT community and help people when they need it most. Working alongside Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education, our networking has widened greatly, therefore reaching more people requiring support and more contacts to provide it.

About Us

Grimsby Pride is a charitable organisation which aims to promote equality, diversity and advances in education, in order to eliminate discrimination against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community.

Grimsby Pride raises awareness of LGBT issues by promoting and staging events, taking part in campaigning and commentary in the media, and providing support to other LGBT charities and voluntary organisations. We also promote the provision of information, advice and support that celebrate LGBT lives and history. We aim for Grimsby to be a place where everybody knows that the diversity offered by the LGBT community is something to be celebrated and in which LGBT people can feel safe and accepted. We believe that inclusiveness improves self esteem and provides a sense of belonging, which helps to diminish the psychological effects of discrimination faced by individuals in daily life.

Our Pride event, which takes place on an annual basis the weekend after August Bank Holiday provides our main platform for a celebration of the diversity of the LGBT community in a context of entertainment, inclusivity and fun.

The event is a focus for the visibility of the LGBT community and provides an opportunity to draw attention to important LGBT issues.

The history of the LGBT Community in North East Lincolnshire stretches over several decades from various self help and support organisations including telephone helplines, to sexual health based charitable organisations, various social outlets etc. However until 2009 members of the local LGBT community had to venture outside of our area to have a sense of belonging and cohesion with like-minded members at other regional or national pride events.

To date we have had 5 pride events beginning in 2009 with “The Event” held at the back of the old Secrets Bar in Pasture Street. We attracted over 800 people to the event and began our working relationship with Pride regulars, Bears Aloud. Many of the participants at our events are from across the local LGBT community and are of all ages. We particularly encourage those who may otherwise feel marginalised.

The events we organise are about community not commerce and always offer a variety of community facilities. We work closely with North East Lincolnshire Council staff, elected Councillors, Members of Parliament, Police, and licensing authorities to ensure our events are both safe and successful.

Grimsby Pride is operated by a small team of unpaid volunteers who are working hard to continue to improve Pride for the benefit of the LGBT and wider community.

We depend upon sponsorship, donations from events, local businesses and supporters and the money we raise through our fundraising activities. If you feel that you could help to support our work, by making a donation, becoming a sponsor, attending one or our events, or offering a few hours of your time, we would welcome your involvement. Details can be found on the ‘Get Involved’ pages of this website.

We are always keen to improve what we do and to be welcoming to all sections of the community. If you have any comments or feedback or would like to get involved in any way, we would love to hear from you. Take a few minutes to look at the information on this site our activities or please come to our Annual General Meeting which is held usually late September to mid October each year following the annual festival.
