Lambda Legal – Florida
The Development Department seeks a Development Officer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a part-time contract basis, who will work closely with the assigned Major Gifts Officer, Events Director, and Fort Lauderdale Leadership Committee to expand Lambda Legal’s support in Fort Lauderdale.
Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people, and people with HIV, through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in New York City, Lambda has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas.
Lambda Legal Fort Lauderdale Development Officer
Responsibilities The Lambda Legal development team covering the Fort Lauderdale area consists of the Deputy Director of Development (based in Seattle), a National Major Gifts Officer (based in New York), the Ft. Lauderdale Development Officer (contract basis), Lambda Legal’s local Board member, local National Leadership Council members and leadership committee members. Major events such as the annual ticketed Fort Lauderdale event as well as significant major donor and prospect house parties are also supported by the national events team (based in Chicago and New York). The local Development Officer will work as a member of this team under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Development, and will be focused on generating leads for new individual, law firm and corporate support for Lambda Legal’s work in the Fort Lauderdale market area. Events and Major Gifts development is the primary focus of the team, so building and maintaining relationships with individual donors as well as law firm and corporate funders is everyone’s responsibility. The Development Officer will have primary responsibility for “lead generation” – finding new potential avenues of support and working with the local volunteer team to convert those leads into financial support. S/he will personally identify, cultivate, and solicit event sponsors, major donors and prospects, and (as appropriate with individual prospects) will also introduce the concept of planned giving and identify such planned giving prospects to the Deputy Director of Development and the MGO. The Development Officer will be expected to be familiar with Lambda Legal’s programmatic work and to report at least weekly by telephone.
Qualifications This position requires a highly-energetic “people-person” with a “roll-up-your-sleeves” attitude, who knows the national and Fort Lauderdale LGBT community and its issues. A candidate must be able to work in an autonomous environment and be self-directed; self-motivated; able to make consistent, rational and independent decisions; and to work effectively under pressure and with minimum supervision. S/he must also be a strong team player, bringing an ethic of information-sharing to the work. Experience working closely with Board and key volunteers and knowledge of the LGBT and/or philanthropic communities in the Fort Lauderdale area is highly desirable. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively, particularly verbally, with a wide range of people, and able to easily establish a rapport with prospects. Outstanding interpersonal skills, personal organizational skills and administrative skills are required. Excel skills are necessary. A candidate must reside in the Fort Lauderdale metro, be willing to work at home, and possess a valid drivers’ license and reliable vehicle.
Compensation This is a contract part-time position, commensurate with experience within the guidelines of Lambda Legal scale. No benefits are provided. Mileage/reasonable travel and other expenses will be reimbursed.
