Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network – Aspen Leadership Group – New York, NY
The Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in the search for a Major Gifts Officer. The Major Gifts Officer is a new position, narrowing the focus of the previous Individual Giving Manager to reflect the organization’s growing investment in individual major gift prospects.
Major Gifts Officer GLSEN
Since 1990, GLSEN (pronounced ‘glisten’) has fought for all students to have the safe and affirming school environment they deserve, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. GLSEN’s staff and its 40 volunteer-led chapters effect this transformation by educating the general public and by supporting individual student leaders, student-led Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), teachers, administrators, and policymakers nationwide. GLSEN’s in-house research department rigorously evaluates the effectiveness of its work.
GLSEN was founded at a time when homosexuality was illegal, supportive teachers were hard to find, and many argued that LGBT youth “didn’t exist.” Today, 96% of LGBT students can identify a supportive educator in their school, anti-LGBT bullying and name-calling are subjects of widespread concern, and more than half of American high schools have a GSA. GLSEN’s work has forged new paths to opportunity for millions of students, but much remains to be done. 74% of LGBT students are still verbally harassed at school, many attend schools without a GSA, and 30% missed at least one entire day of class in the past month because they too unsafe to go to school.
With marriage equality on the horizon, the LGBT movement is at a rare and thrilling crossroads. GLSEN is perfectly positioned to become the next major focus of this civil rights movement, uniting the LGBT community, straight family members of LGBT youth, and all adults who believe in educational opportunity, to make all schools safe for all students. That means that GLSEN’s new major gifts officer can promise donors not just the chance to change the lives of LGBT youth, but to lead the movement and propel the country toward justice.
A minimum of 5 years of direct experience in the solicitation and closing of gifts over $10,000 is required. Fundraising experience with parents of school-age children, LGBT adults, and/or independent K-12 school constituents is preferred.
