  • Earlier this year, The Queen of Ireland, Panti Bliss shot to international prominence overnight after her Noble Call captured the world’s attention.
The video of the speech threw Rory O’Neill, the man behind the make-up, into the role of accidental activist. A couple of million views later, Ireland’s top drag queen has taken up that activist baton, and run as fast as her 6-inch heels could carry her. She is, in her own words, “a court jester, whose duty is to say the un- sayable”.
The Queen of Ireland is a documentary film that follows Rory’s journey from the small Mayo town of Ballinrobe to strutting her stuff on the world stage.
The Queen of Ireland directed by Conor Horgan (One Hundred Mornings, Deep End Dance, The Beholder) and produced by Blinder Films (The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology, Citadel, One Hundred Mornings), the documentary has so far been in creation for approximately four years, and will continue right up until the proposed same-sex marriage referendum in 2015.
The film builds an in-depth picture of a complex and compelling character through behind-the-scenes footage, archive, music and interviews with friends, peers and protégés. It has also been born out of commitment to the Equal Rights movement in Ireland, and a longing to document the changes that are rapidly occurring.
This is where the public’s assistance is needed. The team have done Trojan work over the last four years on a shoestring budget. To continue filming, funds are required for things such as equipment, music and archive licensing, interviewees and all the work that will go into getting this documentary over the finish line.
The The Queen of Ireland team have set up an Indie Go-Go page to appeal for the public’s assistance. This website allows people to donate any amount, anonymously or not, to this fantastic cause. There are even perk packages available, depending on how much you donate. Ranging from film merchandise to exclusive screenings, these perks are a fantastic way to get involved in the documentary, even after you’ve donated.
The Queen of Ireland is not just about Panti Bliss the performer, or Rory O’Neill the accidental activist. It is about how one man in a dress has mobilised a nation and an international community to stand up and fight against injustice. To tell this story, we need your help.
Check out our campaign on Indie Go-Go. Here you’ll find more info on the film and the campaign. Also join us Twitter and Facebook and help us to document this historical moment in Irish history.

  • This week, Vicky Beeching, respected Christian thought leader, musician, and keynote speaker at the upcoming Gay Christian Network (GCN) conference, announced that she is gay.
“For so many Christians in the public eye, coming out as LGBT is a terrifying proposition,” said Justin Lee, executive director of GCN. “But it sends a powerfully positive message to closeted LGBT Christian youth everywhere who need role models in the church. We at GCN congratulate Vicky Beeching  on her courageous decision and are excited to walk this journey with her as our sister and friend.”
“We’re also excited to welcome her as a keynote speaker at our 2015 annual conference, continuing our tradition of hearing from important, culture-shaping Christian voices,” Lee said. GCN is gearing up for its 11th annual conference in Portland, Oregon, from January 8–11, 2015. Vicky Beeching is confirmed as one of the conference’s keynote speakers, alongside author Jeff Chu and Southern Baptist pastor Danny Cortez.
As of this week, the Christian theologian became even more influential for members of the Christian LGBT/ally community—including the attendees of the GCN conference. In an interview with The Independent, Vicky Beeching  said, “What Jesus taught was a radical message of welcome and inclusion and love. I feel certain God loves me just the way I am, and I have a huge sense of calling to communicate that to young people.”
Keynote speakers at the GCN conference, like Beeching, share their own perspectives on important topics for believers in Christ, including members and supporters of the LGBT community. The growing number of attendees at this conference (which has risen from 40 guests in 2005 to 750 in 2013) is a testament to the value of speakers like Beeching—and their personal experiences.
After her announcement, Beeching illustrated what is often seen as a paradox for many Church members around the world. She has come out—and is unquestionably Christian. In light of Beeching’s news, GCN volunteer and seasoned conference attendee Andrew Roblyer sees the positive message that is being sent. As a member of the GCN community, Roblyer said, “I can’t wait to see how this new chapter to her story will encourage and inspire conference attendees in their own coming out journeys.”
“For many people, their first time at a GCN conference is the first time that they are able to fully be themselves,” he continued. GCN believes that Vicky Beeching ’s presence, along with the many other influential guests at its conference, will speak volumes about what it really means to be a follower of Christ.
    About The Gay Christian Network
The Gay Christian Network is an interdenominational nonprofit organization supporting LGBT Christians and those who love them. GCN offers an online community with over 20,000 members along with other videos, articles, and resources, on its website at gaychristian.net. Each year, the organization hosts the annual GCN conference, which features some of the leading voices in today’s LGBT and Christian conversations. It has grown from just 40 attendees to 750 in only 10 years.

  • HuffPost Books featured Cleis Press anthologies Rookies and Active Duty in a spotlight of fiction that highlights LGBTQ military romance. Reviewer Janet Mason said of Neil Plakcy’s Active Duty, “In addition to being well-written, most of the stories got to the heart of the matter of what it means to be openly gay in an hostile institution.” Similarly, she praised Shane Allison’s Rookies as nuanced and complex: “The cops in this anthology have moral compasses, and they have fully developed characters.”
Cleis Press has specialized in intelligent LGBTQ erotica since 1980. Cleis publishes provocative, intelligent books across genres. Whether literary fiction, human rights, mystery, romance, erotica, LGBTQ studies, sex guides, pulp fiction, or memoir, if it’s outside the ordinary, it’s Cleis Press.
More about Active Duty, edited by Neil Plakcy:
In this fierce collection, Neil Plakcy shares heart-pounding stories of men who put their lives on the line for love and duty. The heat of battle only amps up the level of excitement for soldiers who know that any tryst might be their last. A breakup note sent to the front line opens doors to new love in Jay Starre’s “Letter from Home.” In Logan Zachary’s “Ready Reserve,” a summer fling between two buddies with benefits becomes something more. Dirk Strong’s “Marine Guard” follows an embassy officer sent to Italy for work who ends up enjoying a romantic Roman holiday.

More about Rookies, edited by Shane Allison:
Rookie cops are irresistible—a bit wet behind the ears and oh-so-eager. Fresh out of the academy, the young police officers of Rookies are ready to learn the ropes. Hot Cops editor Shane Allison has curated a captivating collection of men in uniform who like to lay down the law. These rookies know how to wield a nightstick and exactly how use their cuffs. Johnny Murdoc’s arresting story “Busted” begins with what looks like a trip to jail, but ends up in lover’s lane. A campus cop in Bearmuffin’s “Officer Jim” enjoys both protecting and serving the cute college boys, who give as good as they get. Eric Del Carlo’s “The Night I Blew the New Blue” gets up close and very personal. Rookies explores the sexier side of these masculine icons and working-class heroes, from U.S. marshals and patrol officers, to detectives and prison guards.

  • In the video we witness the curious first touches between two young men who in this 5-minute- long love anthem explore each other’s bodies like nobody’s watching. Explaining the song’s message Asbjørn says: “My sexuality has never been something I felt like I needed to promote in my music, ‘cause basically it’s not a very big deal to me with whom I fall in love. But this song came out of the blue, and before I even noticed I’d written a very honest song that reflected my love life. I hope it will soothe your hearts as it did mine”.
Danish pop kid with a relentless urge to dance – that how Asbjørn describes himself. At 22, the multi-talented singer, songwriter, musician and producer is, however, so much more than that. With one album under his belt and a second in the pipeline, Asbjørn is hard at work with the ambition of redefining his generation’s take on pop music. Too young to be a vinyl-maniac but too old to embrace the digital age unreflectingly, Asbjørn on February 1 launched his new project Pseudo Visions – a fresh take on today’s music formats that lets Asbjørn’s audience join him on a year- long exploration of his artistry.

The term Pseudo Visions encapsulates the most intense moments that leave you to wonder if they were real or some sort of dream gazes. Every song – or vision – is accompanied by a video, and combined the videos tell a continuous story that will evolve throughout the year. The story is divided into three chapters, and will reach its conclusion in early 2015. “Some of the songs may be radio-friendly, others are just beautiful stories I need to tell. And no matter their commercial potential, all these songs will have equal opportunities”, Asbjørn elaborates. “It’s not up to me which ones people respond to, but I will know that all of them had the chance to change something for someone”. So far four songs have been released and compiled on an EP entitled Pseudo Visions: Chapter One. On August 1, Chapter Two opens with The Love You Have In You and three more songs will follow before Christmas.
The Pseudo Visions project will keep Asbjørn busy throughout 2014, and writing songs, recording, making videos, releasing and touring will surely keep the young pop visionary from post-release restlessness. “Artists post so much bullshit on the social media platforms because they are afraid of being forgotten. But basically, it’s not relevant to my music what I had for breakfast. The important thing is that I live and breathe music, and as long as I do that the fear of being forgotten is not present”, Asbjørn says.

  • As Fiji prepares for parliamentary elections next month – the first in the eight years since Bainimarama took power in the 2006 military coup – Fiji: Play Fair, A human rights agenda documents the continued suppression of freedom of expression, violations of workers’ rights and use of torture by security forces, all of which the government must urgently address.
“A combination of draconian laws, a pattern of intimidation and harassment of those who are critical of the government, as well as reports of torture by the security forces, have created a climate of fear in Fiji,” said Grant Bayldon, Executive Director at Amnesty International New Zealand.
Despite Prime Minister Bainimarama’s commitments to create “a level playing field for all Fijians,” human rights defenders, journalists and trade union leaders continue to face harassment and intimidation for peacefully carrying out their legitimate work.
The briefing documents the case of Kris Prasad, a peaceful activist for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. He was one of 12 people arrested in September 2013 for peacefully protesting against the new Constitution, which came into force that month.
In late April 2014, police again contacted Prasad and other activists, saying that they wanted to reopen the investigation and conduct further interviews – measures that Prasad describes as “tactics of intimidation”.
“Restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly and association in Fiji should be lifted and acts of intimidation and harassment against government critics and peaceful activists must stop,” said Grant Bayldon.
The Government continues to violate workers’ rights by banning strike action for many industries and by intimidating and harassing trade union officials.
In another case highlighted in the human rights agenda, trade union leaders Felix Anthony and Daniel Urai have been arrested and charged with multiple criminal offences over the past two years, including the more serious charges of sedition, for peacefully advocating for workers’ rights.
Compounding the climate of fear are repeated reports of Fijian security forces using torture and other ill-treatment against people in custody. Perpetrators of these and other human rights violations enjoy impunity, with broad amnesties entrenched in the new Constitution.
In a video that surfaced online in March last year, security forces can be seen assaulting a recaptured prisoner. In the disturbing film, Iowene Bendito was repeatedly hit with sticks and batons, while another man was dragged along the ground by a dog. Following the release of the video, Bainimarama reportedly said he would “stand by his men”.
“Torture and ill treatment by security forces must be stopped and those responsible for such crimes held to account,” said Grant Bayldon.
“It is not enough to say the right things when abroad while allowing the repression to continue at home. Prime Minister Bainimarama and his government should act now to end the climate of fear.”
    Background
Amnesty International is calling on all political parties and candidates in Fiji’s upcoming election on 17 September 2014 to respect and protect human rights if they form the next government.
Fiji: Play Fair, A human rights agenda includes a series of recommendations to improve respect for human rights in a number of areas, in law, policy and practice.
The full briefing is available here.

  • This escalated very quickly into something a lot bigger than we anticipated and eventually 29 bands donated tracks including 3 from the USA, 1 from Canada and another in France. We lost our son Ben 4 years ago to cancer when he was only 25 and the Edgar’s Gift charity was formed in his memory. Ben would have been 29 this year, so it made sense to have that many songs on the album.
All 29 bands gave their tracks for free and Gareth Henderson from River Studios in Southampton mastered them all free of charge which was a fantastic gesture. All the artwork was done by friend of the charity Katie Fairfield, again free of charge. The Edgar’s Gift charity CD itself was produced by Torch Music who generously waived postage and charged us a reduced fee for making the Edgar’s Gift charity CD.
We are grateful to all of the above and we must also say a special thank you to another of our supporters Dawn Green who’s help and knowledge in putting this Edgar’s Gift charity CD together was invaluable.
The Edgar’s Gift charity CD is a double album and is now available for £10 and 100% of the money raised from sales will go to providing wishes and gifts for young adults aged 18 to 30 who suffer with cancer. It is also available from all the major download sites iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and amazon.co.uk.
As well selling copies in the UK, the Edgar’s Gift CD has already had sales in USA, Canada, Austria, Germany and Japan, so the appeal of the bands is growing.
Bands/Artists involved are: Lost In Olympus, The Mutineers, The Castellers, Last Edition, The Deets, Under A Banner, Even Nine, The Bottom Line, Slow Readers Club, Alexander McKay, Sam Bradley, Jersey Budd, Chris J Priest, Lewis Clay, The Furies, Satellite Empire, Riot Noise, One Soul Thrust, Solice, Best Not Broken, Sisteray, The Shapers, A Wasted Effort, Half Hour Hotel, The Delinquents, The Humanitarians, Kindred Shins, High State and The Cornerstones.

  • The law, which drew condemnation from the UN when it was promulgated in February, called for a 14-year jail term for a first conviction, and imprisonment for life for ‘aggravated homosexuality’. Challenged by 10 petitioners, including civil society, parliamentarians and academics, the law was annulled by the Court over a lack of quorum when the bill was passed.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid tribute to all those who contributed to this “step forward,” particularly the human rights defenders in Uganda who spoke out, at times incurring great personal risk.
“The Secretary-General calls for further efforts to decriminalize same-sex relationships and address the stigma and discrimination that persist in Uganda against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons,” said a statement issued by his spokesperson.
Also welcoming the decision to annul the law was the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), which had warned that the legislation may obstruct effective responses to the virus.
“This is a great day for social justice,” UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé declared in a statement. “The rule of law has prevailed.”
UNAIDS noted that while homosexuality remains illegal in Uganda, annulling the law could have positive public health implications. Studies show that when gay men and other men who have sex with men face discrimination, including abuse, incarceration and prosecution, they are less likely to seek HIV testing, prevention and treatment services.
“[Ugandan] President Yoweri Museveni had personally indicated to me that he wants Uganda to accelerate its AIDS response to ensure all people have access to life-saving services,” said Mr. Sidibé.
UNAIDS urged all Governments around the world, to protect the human rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender people through repealing criminal laws against adult consensual same sex sexual conduct; implementing laws to protect people from violence and discrimination; promoting campaigns that address homophobia and transphobia; and ensuring access to health services, including HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.
