  • The confidential and anonymous study has been commissioned by GLEN and BeLonG To Youth Services and is being carried out by researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin.
“Social and political attitudes towards LGBTI people have changed enormously over the last 20 years. Huge numbers of LGBTI people are openly living their lives with the support of their families, friends, communities and work colleagues. However, despite this progress we know that LGBTI people still face significant challenges being themselves, including discrimination and harassment, and that this can have a negative impact on their mental health and wellbeing”, said Brian Sheehan, Director of GLEN.
“Things are changing rapidly for LGBTI young people, as they come out across the country in greater numbers than ever before. This research will allow us to further develop our understanding of being LGBTI, and will guide us in making strategic decisions, uncovering unmet needs, and in many cases, help us discover new ideas for further effective services” according to David Carroll, Director of BeLonG To Youth Service.
“Uncovering new information about LGBTI young people is the first step in the process of empowering them in regard to their continued journey towards inclusion across many aspects of Irish society” continued Carroll.
“This major survey LGBTIreland, aims to give us a better understanding of the experience of being an LGBTI person in Ireland today. The survey asks LGBTI people about their school or college experiences; any violence or harassment they may have faced; their workplace experiences and the current state of their mental health and emotional wellbeing” said Professor Agnes Higgins, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Trinity College Dublin, who is leading the research.
“We expect that the survey results will identify priorities for those services that are key to every person’s wellbeing – education, youth, health, policing, and mental health and support services – to ensure that they understand and are responsive to the needs of LGBTI people” said Sheehan.
Any LGBTI person, currently living in the Republic of Ireland and aged 14 or over can participate in the survey at http://www.lgbtireland.net or it can be completed over the phone or by post.
The project is being funded by the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP).

  • The Futsal team have only been together since January and play in a JBG? kit to help raise awareness of our campaign work. It’s believed that they are the first ‘out and proud’ LGBT Ladies Futsal Team in the country, (with straight player allies) and they have recently been affiliated to Manchester County FA as an official Futsal Club.
Around 18 months ago LGBT Role Model of the Year 2013, Manchester City Ladies goalkeeper Andie Worrall ‘came out’ being the first women’s player in the elite game in England still active, Andie also became one of our patrons, this inspired a group of other women from the Manchester area to follow suit and contact us asking if they could play in a Futsal League under our name.
The team quickly gelled and won the Winter Futsal league to qualify for the Regional Semi-finals of the Futsal Cup, which they took part in at the beginning of June. The team unfortunately did not progress any further in the competition but it gave then valuable experience to go into the Pride Games event.
The event saw 12 teams compete in torrential rain but undeterred JBG? Futsal Team braved the elements and only conceded for the first time in the final minute of their semi-final fixture.
The final against Reddish North End Ladies proved to be a cagey affair with both sides defending astutely early in the game, then RNE took the lead just before half time. But the never say die attitude and a will to win saw JBG? equalise with just 20 seconds to go. So it was to be penalties. Perhaps the England team should have been watching as part of their World Cup 2014 preparations as both teams gave everything they had. Thankfully JBG?’s heroic goalkeeping and powerful spot kicks edged them as winners 4-3 and Just a Ball Game? LGBT Futsal Team became tournament winners 2014.

  • Just a Ball Game ? is a Not For Profit Voluntary Community Organisation serving South, South East and East Manchester with an 18+ Ladies Futsal Team. Our organisation was formed in 2011 and has been at the forefront of raising awareness around inclusion and visibility of LGBT people and challenging homophobia in football (and other sports) this funding has enabled us to branch out locally and provide a safe space young LGBT women and LGBT friendly women to play the ever increasing participation sport of the small sided games within football.
The Equity Foundation grant will be used to provide a team kit to play in and a set of training shirts, accessories like balls and training bibs first aid kit. Other monies will see us able to affiliate with Manchester County FA enabling us to compete in local leagues and tournaments, and the remainder will pay for venue hire, league fees and coaching.
Female Co-Chair, Ann Morgan said, “Women’s football is on the up but stereotyping and bullying and a macho male environment often put off young people who identify as LGBT from being involved in the beautiful game, the work we do at JBG? helps to break down some of the barriers faced and visibly showcase that if you are female and you have a love of football you can be involved even when you hail from a different culture or communities to your peers.”

Speaking on the collaboration and the brands support of Stonewall, SNOG founders Rob Baines and Pablo Uribe commented: ‘This year has been an exciting year for SNOG, we launched our first range that you can enjoy at home and we wanted to mark this by supporting a cause personal to our hearts – people’s freedom to SNOG who they want. You never forget your first SNOG and it should not matter who that is with. We admire and respect the work of Stonewall and are proud to be part of the 25th year celebration. We commissioned Cassette Playa as we loved the freedom and vibrancy of Carri Munden’s graphic sensibility and we are thrilled so many of the SNOG fans have got involved in the campaign.’

We’re excited to collaborate with SNOG to help us continue to campaign for LGBT equality around the world.’
As well as raising awareness, SNOG is helping Stonewall to raise funds via their London based shops where a special Stonewall serving, featuring a selection of rainbow coloured fruits, will be available for the duration of the Stonewall 25 celebration. A donation of £3 can be made to Stonewall by texting ‘SNOG’ to 70300, with proceeds going towards the charity’s continued international work.

  • In the period 2014-2019, the European Parliament will play a central role in shaping EU policy against discrimination; on hate speech and hate crime; on free movement; on the rights of transgender individuals; health; and LGBTI issues in the EU’s foreign policy.
Find out why this election matters for the fundamental rights of LGBTI people.
    1. Decisive EU action against discrimination
The next Parliament should urge the Commission to put forward an LGBT roadmap, and press the Council to finally adopt the anti-discrimination directive.
The EU has comprehensive equality policies on disabilitygender equality, and Roma integration, but none for sexual orientation or gender identity. Furthermore, EU law outlaws discrimination on sexual orientation in employment—yet in education, social protection, healthcare, and access to goods and services this is still not the case.
    2. Common EU rules against hate speech and crime
The EU should combat hate speech and crime based on sexual orientation or gender identity more than it currently does.
As many as one in four (26%) LGBT people in Europe were attacked or threatened due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. While EU law foresees higher penalties for racist and xenophobic speech and crime since 2008, it sets no standards for homophobic or transphobic speech and crime.
    3. Free movement for LGBTI individuals and their families
It is time for the EU to enable the mutual recognition of the effects of civil status documents in the EU.
Marriages and partnerships legal in one Member State cease to exist when crossing borders, despite the principle that Member States must recognise one another’s judiciary decisions. This causes severe trouble for families (including children) and individuals who can’t travel, live or work in another EU country, simply because of who they love.
    4. Secure transgender rights
Transgender people still face a number of problems in their daily lives, to do with health, access to employment, or in their dealings with justice systems.
EU institutions should now ensure the broad inclusion of gender identity in European laws and policies. Furthermore, the EU should continue working with the World Health Organization to stop considering transgender individuals mentally ill.
    5. Tackle discrimination in access to health
Accessing healthcare has become increasingly difficult for certain groups, including LGBTI people. The EU should increase its actions in this important field.
Often LGBTI individuals face obstacles when accessing health services, including public healthcare. This is notably the case for transgender individuals; sex workers; men who have sex with men; and LGBTI people from vulnerable groups, such as younger people or from a migrant background. EU action in the field of health should seek to reduce discrimination, in partnership with practitioners and NGOs.
    6. Promote the rights of LGBTI people abroad
The EU must continue promoting the full enjoyment of all human rights for LGBTI people in the world, as it has done over the last years.
In June 2013, the Council adopted landmark guidelines on LGBTI rights in the world. EU external policy should include LGBTI rights prominently in all bilateral relationships; enlargement and neighbourhood policies; at international organisations; and as part of funding support for human rights defenders.
