It will be music to your ears no matter what your taste when more than 100 North-East acts join some of the country’s most respected artists for the return of Middlesbrough Live to a host of town centre venues.
While fast-rising singer-songwriter Rae Morris has top billing on Saturday night’s Middlesbrough Live main stage in the Town Hall Crypt, pubs and cafes will be joined by mima and the central reference library in hosting performances by a truly eclectic range of local acts.
Morris will be supported by critically acclaimed Woodpigeon and Withered Hand, while the Crypt will host a free-entry afternoon session featuring Birmingham’s Superfood, Dundonian four-piece Model Aeropolanes, emerging indie rock ‘n’ rollers Violet Deep and impressive local band Steal Strings.
But there is also a real buzz about the dozens of local acts that will create a wall of sound around the other town centre venues – with the full running order for each venue now unveiled.
Local bars Mink, Walkabout, The Lobby, O’Connell’s, The Central and Dr Brown’s will lay on a treat for Teesside music-lovers when they host acts throughout the day and evening.
But mima, The Baker Street Kitchen, The Olde Young Tea House and the Reference Library will also join in the fun as unusual music venues.
No fewer than 27 acts will perform throughout the day at O’Connell’s, starting with Andy X at 11.30am through to No Xcuse at 10.30pm.
Among the O’Connell’s set will be local band, The Alice Charmers, who describe themselves as “the best raggle-taggle-fraggle-rocking, banjo-beating bunch of boys you’ll see for many a country mile”.
Band member Mark Davies said: “To be a part of this celebration of everything that is great about the Teesside music scene is both an honour and a privilege.
“We’re looking forward to providing a set which is the equivalent of ordering the English options from a Chinese restaurant, and still using chopsticks to eat it with.”
O’Connell’s will also play host to lively Yarm-born singer Jake Taylor, who was raised in Norton and now lives in Stockton. He said “Middlesbrough Live is a must-do for any local musician who takes themselves seriously. The idea of playing this festival which is a yearly treat for the North-East is an exciting prospect. The fact that we are host to some of the county’s best upcoming talent makes it even more special.”
Among the acts performing at the reference library are alt-folk-pop duo, The Daydream Club, who are travelling from Leicester for Middlesbrough Live.
Redcar-born lead singer Paula Walker said: “The venue looks unreal – it’s going to be stunning. It’s always amazing when I get to play gigs back home. There is something about us Northerners – we just love music, it’s in our bones. That’s something you really get a sense of from the audiences and atmosphere.”
Middlesbrough band King Mojo, who will be playing their brand of authentic edgy rock with a modern soul at The Lobby, will be taking part in Middlesbrough Live for the first time.
However, lead guitarist Oz said: “We are buzzing about playing in our hometown. We’ve been building a following across the UK, recently playing The 100 Club in London, but to be part of an event that our closest family and friends can also come to see is just fantastic.”
Among those performing at Mink will be Stockton’s Kerianne Covell, who recently enjoyed successful auditions on X-Factor when music mogul Simon Cowell called the shoe shop where she works to explain her absence.
Headline act at The Central will be popular North-East band The Lake Poets, while headlining Walkabout will be Hyde & Beast, the Futureheads/Golden Virgins drummers Dave Hyde and Neil Bassett, whose live show will feature familiar faces from the North-East music scene.
mima’s contribution will be headlined by Monotony, a six-piece punk outfit who have been taking BBC6 Music by storm. Also appearing at the art gallery are Sorry Escalator, Milky Wimpshake and the majestic savage-garage sounds of Brown Brogues.
Meanwhile, The Baker Street Kitchen will host Folk Lines, a ticketed event featuring a mix of folk music and poetry. Tickets are now on sale from the eaterie.
Street performers, comedians and community groups will take the party atmosphere out of the venues into an external performance space around the Spectratxt light sculpture.
Other highlights include a record fair in the Town Hall, a town centre market, and fun fair rides and inflatables available in Centre Square, which will also play host to a Community Pride stage.
Discounted tickets to the evening event on Middlesbrough Live’s main stage in the Town Hall Crypt are available now, priced £8 each or £6 if you like Middlesbrough Live on Facebook.
Tickets are available from Middlesbrough Town Hall Box Office, Albert Road, Midlesbrough, TS1 2QJ. Call (01642) 729729 or 815181 or e-mail boxoffice@middlesbrough.gov.uk.
Entry to all other venues apart from The Baker Street Kitchen is free of charge.
