NATIONAL HIV/AIDS & AGING AWARENESS DAY RELEASES SOCIAL MEDIA AND EVALUATION TOOLS TO SUPPORT PLANNED EVENTS

(GayWebSource.com) Washington, DC -The AIDS Institute (TAI) is excited to announce that the social media guide and event evaluation form is available for use for the 4th annual National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAAD) scheduled for September 18, 2011. The theme for NHAAAD is “Aging is a part of life; HIV doesn’t have to be”

TAI and the NHAAAD Steering Committee encourage organizations to use social media to reach out to older adults about the importance of being tested for HIV and how to further protect themselves. The social media guide includes examples of posts for organizational Facebook and Twitter accounts that could be used to promote, educate, and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and older adults among followers.

“The release of the social media guide is timely and relevant for organizations that are looking for innovative ways in which to reach target populations. Social networking sites are an excellent forum to engage in conversations about prevention of HIV/AIDS among older adults and we encourage those planning events to use the tool as an effective advertising and educational mechanism within
planned activities”, states Michelle Scavnicky, Director of Education and Capacity Building Assistance Programs at The AIDS Institute.

In addition, the NHAAAD event evaluation form was created to support event planners in the development, implementation and evaluation of NHAAAD activities. The tool will also provide valuable data to assist The AIDS Institute and the national Steering Committee in future planning efforts for NHAAAD. It is encouraged that organizers of NHAAAD activities pre-register events through 2011 NHAAAD Event Registration as well as complete the event evaluation form.

“As a member of the NHAAAD evaluation workgroup, we felt it was important to have an effective and comprehensive evaluation tool that community planners could use to evaluate their events and assess future event planning needs”, states Mark Brennan-Ing,PhD, Senior Research Scientist, AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA), ACRIA Center on HIV and Aging.

The AIDS Institute invites organizations and community members who plan, implement and participate in awareness activities or events on or around September18, 2011, to register their events at 2011 NHAAAD Event Registration.
