Gill Action – Denver, CO
Works with Gill Action staff, state and LGBT national leaders, government affairs and other advocacy professionals to help build and oversee legislative campaigns to enact pro-LGBT legislation on the state level.
National Policy Director Gill Action
Gill Action, established in 2005 by software entrepreneur Tim Gill, seeks to secure equal opportunity for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression. Gill Action partners with and provides resources to individuals and organizations working to advance equality through the legislative, political, and electoral process.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess and prioritize state (and sometimes, municipal) legislative opportunities to gauge where Gill Action should invest time and financial resources.
- Provide legislative analysis, technical support, and strategic guidance for Gill Action program areas to advance legislative victories. This includes working closely with stakeholders and coalition allies in the development and implementation of legislative plans and budgets.
- Working with other Gill Action staff, research and develop funding opportunities to help Gill Action meet its policy and political objectives.
- Serve as Gill Action’s lead lobbyist in state capitols, cultivating and building relationships with legislators on a bi-partisan basis.
- Play a leading role in developing content, recruiting speakers and panelists for the bi-annual Political OutGiving donor conference.
- Working with other coalition partners, assist in policy and communications training for legislators, consultants and other professionals retained on advocacy campaigns.
- Consult with legal experts at national LGBT organizations to ensure legislation being considered is consistent with Gill Action’s values and objectives.
- Brief Gill Action colleagues, along with principal donors, on status of the organization’s engagement in state legislative efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5-7 years legislative experience, ideally supplemented with some campaign and election work.
- Ability to analyze and explain legislation in professional, non-partisan manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work with individuals and entities across the political spectrum.
- Exceptional communication skills including public speaking,
- Demonstrated professional conduct and decorum when relating to staff, constituents, or other stakeholders outside Gill Action.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Ability to travel frequently.
- Commitment to the mission of Gill Action.
- Extensive experience utilizing Apple and Microsoft Office products, Keynote and other presentation software.
