GLSEN – Washington, DC
The Organizing Associate (OA) is charged with designing, constructing, and overseeing the implementation of grassroots organizing campaigns geared at mobilizing GLSEN’s diverse constituency. GLSEN has a wide range of constituents (through various channels such as Chapter volunteers, social media followers, email subscribers, local partners, etc.) who care deeply about our mission and look for ways to be involved. The OA works to bring interested constituents into our policy work and is responsible for organizing action campaigns, both digitally and on the ground. The OA also works closely with other members of GLSEN’s Public Policy team to identify areas in which constituent engagement will advance GLSEN’s public policy goals. This position is based in GLSEN’s Washington, D.C. office.
Organizing Associate GLSEN
Responsibilities:
- Develop constituent engagement systems and organizing and advocacy strategies to increase awareness of GLSEN’s public policy goals;
- Work closely with other members of GLSEN’s Public Policy team to identify strategic areas for constituent engagement;
- Design and launch digital advocacy campaigns and action alerts to align online engagement with political strategies on the federal, state, and local levels;
- Engage with GLSEN’s Chapter network on state and local action;
- Engage and organize activists on the ground in key states, including planning and orchestrating state lobby days or rallies;
- Build and maintain partnerships with relevant state and local organizations;
- Work with members of GLSEN’s communications team to engage social media followers on our policy work;
- Manage list of constituents interested in policy and advocacy and continue to engage in ongoing advocacy efforts;
- Keep constituents informed of relevant local, state, and national legislation and action opportunities through communications vehicles such as blog posts and newsletters;
- Other duties as required, including administrative tasks.
Qualifications and Required Skills:
- Ability to formulate and execute grassroots campaigns in targeted areas effectively with a degree of autonomy;
- Ability to break down complex governmental processes or policy problems into material digestible by the general public;
- 2-5 years’ experience in grassroots campaign organizing;
- Experience in political or issue campaigns;
- Understanding of the legislative and administrative processes;
- BS/BA in related field or related experience;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment;
- Ability to quickly build relationships and respond proactively to feedback;
- Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines;
- Ability and willingness to travel as needed;
- Ability to multitask;
- Familiarity with, and a passion for, LGBT issues in K-12 education;
- Knowledge of constituent management and engagement software (CQ Engage/Capwiz, etc.) a plus.
