Oxford Pride – Oxford, England
This year, Pride will be returning once again to Oxpens field, next to the ice rink, with a vastly expanded range of entertainment, concessions and stalls, providing something for everyone.
Oxford Pride 2014
The parade and main event will take place on Saturday, 07 June 2014 with the ten day Oxford Pride Festival running from Friday, 30 May – Sunday, 08 June 2014.
Inspired by a street party celebrating the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002, Pride has grown and evolved into the event it is today. Thanks in no small part to the continued support of the local Councils, gay pubs The Jolly Farmers and The Castle Tavern, and of course our dedicated an diverse community.
Pride is both a celebration of the unity and diversity of our community, and a reflection on how far we have progressed over recent decades in terms of equality and integration. We believe in an inclusive society, where everyone feels accepted as part of our extended family. We invite and welcome everyone to join us in being proud of everything we are, and everything we have achieved together.
History of Oxford Pride
Oxford Pride is a celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer life in Oxfordshire. The events supporting or arranged by Oxford Pride promote awareness of LGBT issues by providing information, education and entertainment in a safe and encouraging environment. Oxford Pride is a membership based non-profit organization run by a dedicated team of volunteers.
On Spring bank holiday 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s golden jubilee, the gay pubs Jolly Farmers and Castle Tavern held a street party on Paradise Street with barbecues, games and entertainment. When far more people turned up than expected it prompted many people to talk of a organizing a Pride festival in Oxford. On 3rd May 2003, Oxford saw its first ever Pride Event, held in Oxpens Field.
The Oxford Pride Event moved from May to July in 2005, then in 2009 the date was changed to early June to encourage more involvement by university staff and students.
In 2008 Oxford Pride expanded to include the Oxford Pride Parade; starting in the city centre the Parade went past the gay pubs and continued on to the event.
Oxford Pride continued to expand and develop in 2009 with the introduction of a 10-day art & culture festival with events produced by Oxford Pride plus local organizations, businesses and individuals.
Oxford Pride continues to provide a positive focus for Oxfordshire individuals and community groups and encourages people from outside of Oxford to visit the city.
In March 2013 Oxford Pride received registered charity status.
