The Health Policy Research Program at the Fenway Institute is seeking a Policy Analyst to support TFI’s health policy research efforts. Under the direction of Director of Health Policy Research, the Policy Analyst will work closely with other Fenway Institute researchers on analyses of LGBT health policy and HIV, STI, and Hepatitis policy issues.
The Fenway Institute operates the nation’s first community-based HIV research program, which has been conducting long-term epidemiological research since 1985. Fenway is one of eight sites in the US that was selected by the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases to recruit participants for the first clinical trials of an HIV vaccine. In 2007, The Fenway Institute was awarded a federal population center grant from the National Institutes of Health, representing the first time a community-based organization has been selected for this type of work. Working with the American College of Physicians, they also published the nation’s first medical textbook focused on LGBT people The Fenway Guide to LGBT Health. In 2013, the LGBT Aging Project became a program of The Fenway Institute.
Policy Analyst Fenway Health
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting a literature review and an environmental scan on effective quality improvement interventions to reduce LGBT health disparities in specific chronic disease areas.
- Conducting policy analysis and needs assessments, strategy development and community education regarding LGBT health disparities.
- Educating health care providers and vendors of Electronic Health Records (EHR) software about best practices for gathering sexual orientation and gender identity (SO/GI) data in clinical settings and in EHR;
- Educating LGBT leaders and community members about the importance of disclosing LGBT identity and same-sex behavior to health care providers;
- Educating policy makers about the public health benefits of inclusion of SO/GI in Stage 3 Meaningful Use Guidelines and Certified EHR Technology criteria;
- Identifying strategies for addressing and reducing LGBT health disparities and promoting culturally competent health care and mental health/substance use treatment in the context of implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA);
- Implementation and policy issues related to pre-exposure prophylaxis and other bio behavioral HIV prevention approaches;
- Policy issues affecting LGBT youth, LGBT elder; and older adults living with HIV;
- Issues affecting LGBT people involved with the criminal justice system, both adults and juveniles;
- How new health care deliver and finance models like Accountable Care Organizations and Patient Centered Medical Homes can be shaped to ensure quality care for LGBT patients and those living with HIV;
- Other priorities that emerge.
The Policy Analyst will also be asked to assist with clerical duties.
The Fenway Institute conducts policy research on issues affecting LGBT health, HIV policy, Hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), Tuberculosis, and other issues. We also address the social determinants of health, which the World Health Organization defines as “the circumstances in which people are born, grow up, live, work and age, as well as the systems put in place to deal with illness.” We conduct research on issues affecting LGBT youth and LGBT elders, and on policies affecting LGBT people involved with the corrections system. Funders of our work include the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute of Corrections, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and other funders.
Requirements
- MPH or Master’s in a related field strongly preferred
- 2-3 years’ experience
- HIV-related and LGBT health experience preferred
- Experience analyzing data using Stata, SAS or SPSS
- Strong communication, writing and editing skills
- Ability to search peer-reviewed literature in PubMed, Google Scholar and other databases and describe key findings
- Proficiency with MS Office and Internet applications
- Experience with design applications a plus
- Survey software experience preferred
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to diverse communities, particularly communities of color and LGBT communities
- Ability to travel as needed
- Experience working with an ethnically, culturally and racially diverse work staff preferred
- Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals required
