As coordinator of our SAGE program, the successful candidate for this position will oversee support systems for local LGBTQ+ elders and will coordinate the diversity awareness education of select elder care service providers who interact with this population.
The Out Alliance SAGE is a voice for Rochester’s older gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer, and intersex adults. It provides opportunities for personal growth, connection to community, and access to senior services. SAGE is open to all ages and members of the community, but concentrates on education, advocacy, and service of the needs of the fifty-plus LGBTQ+ population.

Employment Status: Part-Time: 15 hours/week

Position Summary: We are looking for an emotionally intelligent, competent, and compassionate individual to act as an advocate, helping aging LGBTQ+ people foster their capabilities in order to improve their daily lives and experiences. Successful candidate will also coordinate the training of select service providers to increase their understanding of the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ elders.
SAGE Coordinator responsibilities:
- As part of a team — plan, coordinate, and implement communication, resource education, and referral systems to help LGBTQ elders and their families best prepare to “age in place.”
- Assist with program development, including vetting, training, supervising and evaluating volunteers to engage in weekly phone contact with seniors in the “Call to Connect” program.
- Establish protocols for interviewing service users to assess their unique needs – current conditions, strengths, weaknesses, and appropriateness for the program.
- Provide support packages to help SAGE and their families overcome barriers to care (e.g., social isolation, inadequate safety nets) and improve their access to resources.
- Refer clients to programs and services designed for aging as needed, acting as a liaison between client and appropriate service provider.
- Advocate for the well-being of older adults, including monitoring for elder abuse, depression, and need.
- Recruit select aging services vendors for “Safe Zone” training and participation in education programs that will result in designation as a “supportive vendor” for LGBTQ+ people.
- Plan monthly “Lunch and Learn” events open to clients and service vendors that highlight best practices to enhance quality of life, health and wellness as people “age in place”.
- Collaborate with HCR (Home Care of Rochester) to maximize distribution efficacy of programs and resources to potential and existing clients.
- Attend staff meeting.
Job Requirements :
A. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in social service environment. Additional relevant education or gerontology certification a plus.
B. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to relate and communicate well with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of social theories and best practices, particularly relating to the unique challenges faced by aging LGBTQ & minority populations.
- Social perceptiveness and ability to assess situations.
- Ability to build and maintain professional collaborative relationships
- Ability to develop educational and training programs and coordinate scheduling of such.
- Willing to submit to background checks
- Must possess valid driver’s license and have access to a fully insured vehicle for occasional work-related travel
