Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) – New York, NY
The primary purpose of the SAGEVets Program is to help LGBT vets, age 50 and over, access VA benefits. Particular barriers or areas of concern include discharge updates, service-connected disability benefits and spousal benefits, especially around same-sex spouses. To this end, SAGEVets works closely with its legal partner, the Veterans’ Justice and LGBT Projects of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC). This position is responsible for maintaining close communication and collaboration with LSNYC, and for making referrals to them. This position is additionally responsible for all activities of the SAGEVets Program, including outreach, presentation, networking, program production, intake, case management and referral, and is an integral part of the Care Management team. This position requires a self-starter with significant people skills as well as organizational skills, to create and build relationships, create systems and meet the program’s deliverables. Case management and program production experience are required as well. Someone with a knowledge of aging, LGBT communities and VA systems strongly desired. Strong preference for a veteran of US military service for filling this position. This position must take responsibility for learning about the history and experiences of older LGBT people in the military and for incorporating that information into programs and presentations. This position requires much local travel and some travel around the state.
