The GLReview, a bimonthly magazine for thoughtful GLBT people, reaches a major milestone this fall with the publication of its 100th issue. To celebrate, this issue will bring back the most talked-about and important articles from past 99 issues. The selection of articles for the “best of” issue will be based on feedback from readers and input from the editors.
The GLReview is a national magazine of history, culture, and politics that covers the full range of social, scientific, and cultural topics raised by same-sex sexuality. Over the past 19 years, The GLReview has offered a forum for many of the world’s great writers and thinkers to address the big questions of interest to GLBT people and their friends. Contributors have included such notable writers, thinkers, and activists as Edward Albee, Martin Duberman, John D’Emilio, Lillian Faderman, Barney Frank, Andrew Holleran, Larry Kramer, David Mixner, Sarah Schulman, Patricia Nell Warren, John Waters, Edmund White, and the late Gore Vidal. The magazine also features the fabulous caricatures of Charles Hefling.
Each issue features six or seven in-depth essays organized around a central theme, such as “the science of homosexuality” or “election 2012.” About a third of each issue is devoted to reviews of current books of GLBT interest, along with reviews of new movies and plays. Editor and founder Richard Schneider Jr. writes a column called “BTW” that comments on the quirky stories found “by the wayside” on the road to GLBT justice, poetic and otherwise.
Asked by the New York Times to comment on the importance of The GLReview, writer-activist Larry Kramer replied: “If you want to deal with scholarly, intelligent arguments, there’s really no place else you can publish.”
Founded in winter 1994 as a quarterly named The Harvard Gay & Lesbian Review, the journal sported a simple cover and a black-and-white interior, with few illustrations, for many years. After a series of overhauls, The GLReview is now printed in full color on high-quality paper with lots of fabulous photographs and helpful illustrations.
It was in 2000 that the name was changed to The Gay & Lesbian Review / Worldwide. A few years later, the magazine acquired the web domain “GLReview.com.” The website at www.GLReview.com features a sampling of articles from the current issue for all to peruse. Subscribers get automatic access to each full issue as well as past years. There is also a digital edition for tablet readers, which is can be accessed via the Zinio link on our website.
With over 8,000 paid subscribers, the GLReview prints 11,000 copies and has an estimated 25,000 readers. The 100th issue, which is also our holiday issue (Nov.-Dec. 2012), could well become a collector’s item. The GLReview is sold in bookstores, including Barnes & Noble, and can be found in many libraries nationwide.
