Glasgow 2014 is a key member of the LGBT Stakeholder Group helping to ensure that the LGBT community have a voice within the Commonwealth Games. They have been highly supportive of the Pride House project and given a great deal of tangible help throughout the time since LEAP Sports Scotland was appointed to organise and manage the project.
sportscotland, a key member of the National Sports Co-ordinating Group, have worked with LEAP Sports Scotland on their engagement with sports governing bodies. They provided substantial ongoing practical support to ensure that LGBT issues are fully considered within the sports agenda.
David Grevemberg, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2014, said 'We aim to stage an outstanding, athlete centred and sport focused Games of world class competition; a Games that will be celebrated across the Commonwealth, generate enormous pride in Glasgow and Scotland, and leave a lasting legacy.
I am incredibly proud to become Patron of Pride House, a fantastic initiative promoting respect for human rights and positive social change
Glasgow 2014 continues to focus on using the power of the Games to change attitudes by celebrating diversity in everything we do and by delivering a truly inclusive sports programme.'
Article 7 of the Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) Constitution states clearly that there should be no discrimination of individuals ‘on any grounds whatsoever’ and that CGAs entering teams into the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are doing so under these constitutional terms.
Stewart Harris said 'At sportscotland our aim is to ensure that everyone in Scotland has more and better opportunities to be involved in sport. The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has given us a fantastic opportunity to accelerate our plans for a world class sporting system at every level to help us deliver those opportunities.
We work closely with our partners in LEAP Sports Scotland and the governing bodies of sport to understand the barriers to participation for the LGBT community and Pride House has a very important role to play in encouraging increased engagement.
I am very proud to be a Patron for Pride House and look forward to attending events during the Games.'
