Late Friday afternoon, Resource Center Dallas sent out a news release, begging the community for help. It’s food pantry is “critically low.” Resource Center spokesman Rafael McDonnell told the Dallas Voice, the situation has gotten so dire, “We’re giving away Twizzlers because that’s all we’ve got.”
On average, Resource Center’s food pantry hands out seven tons of food to about 1900 HIV+ clients each week.
How to help:
Donate CASH directly to the Resource Center….
You can donate cash online or in-person (2701 Reagan St). There’s no question, cash always goes the furthest. That way the center can buy exactly what it needs, and probably for cheaper than you can get it. Besides, you can write off a cash donation on your taxes.
….OR Donate Canned Goods directly to the Resource Center.
The Resource Center is collecting canned goods at three locations:
- Friday & Saturday — Resource Center main location – 2701 Reagan St
- Monday — Resource Center Pantry – 5450 Denton Drive Cut Off
- Saturday 11a – 2p — Bring them to the Resource Center’s 30th anniversary celebration
Bring Donations to the Round-Up Saloon on Friday…
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence DFW have already organized a “Pack the Pantry” canned food drive. According to the Facebook Invite, “Please bring your nonperishable food items, gift cards (Kroger, Tom Thumb, Albertson’s or any you can provide). We will also accept cash as the Resource Center can make a dollar go much farther than a can of food. Let’s see if we can pack the pantry in 1 hour Friday night! Happy Pride!”
Keep your ears open for other opportunities
I’ve heard rumblings about other organizations that will be collecting this weekend. However, nothing else specifically confirmed.
If anyone else is organizing a drive, let me know. I’d be happy to update this page!
Be careful who you give it to
Scammers will ALWAYS try to take advantage of situations like this. Don’t give cash to someone just because he says he’s collecting for the Resource Center. If you want to be certain, just donate directly. The need is there, but make sure your money goes to the right place before you give it away.
Find a Way to Help!
No matter how you decide to do it. Do it. It’ll make you feel better than bubbles. Really.
