Single Review: New remixed single from Welsh sensation builds on success
★★★★
We’ve loved Rod Thomas, better known as Bright Light Bright Light, since his first album Make Me Believe in Hope debuted in 2012. His beautiful pop songs of love and loss resonate with anyone possessing a heart. Last year’s follow up, Life is Easy, found the Welsh singer collaborating with pop legend Elton John. A U.S. tour followed that album, including several dates opening for Sir Elton.
This year Thomas will release a remixed and reimagined version of Life is Easy entitled Life is Hard. The first single, ‘Good Luck’, is a post-break up anthem with soaring vocals and throbbing synth beats. It teams Thomas with Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters; they make a perfect pair. Ana’s “go to hell” attitude made famous on the classic Scissor Sister’s track, ‘Let’s Have a Kiki’ is on full display here. The sentiments echoed by both singers are what we’ve all longed to tell a former flame at some point in our lives. If you’re newly single and ready to put the past behind you then this is your summer anthem. Thomas has a bright (pun intended) career ahead of him if he keeps spinning the same gold he has up to this point. Here’s hoping for increased exposure for Thomas and his emotionally resonant dance pop. Further collaborations with talents like Ms. Matronic will only help.
Life is Hard will be released on 15 June and includes remixes by Todd Terry, Alan Braxe, Cyclist, In the Night and Severino.
Thomas will also continue touring with Elton John across the UK in June and will open for Kylie Minogue at the BST Festival in Hyde Park on 21 June.
