B&B owner Susanna Wilkinson loses her appeal after being sued by two gay men for refusing to allow them to share a double bed.

Mr. Black and Mr. Morgan were refused a double bed after they booked and paid a deposit for a double room at Mrs Wilkinson’s B&B in Cookham, Cornwall.

Upon arrival Mrs Wilkinson, a Christian, refused the couple to share a double bed on the grounds that the two were not married, saying that her religious beliefs determined her decision.

The couple, decided to take the owner to court on grounds of unlawfully discriminating against them and successfully sued Ms. Wilkinson, she was ordered to pay over £3500 in damages last year.

The BBC are reporting that Mrs Wilkinson’s lawyers ‘argued that a person offering bed and breakfast in their own home was entitled to refuse to allow people who were not married or in a civil partnership to share a double bed.

The couple are not in a civil partnership. In these circumstances, there was no direct or indirect discrimination.’

Ms. Wilkinson appealed the decision but her challenged was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, however it did give permission for Mrs Wilkinson to appeal to the Supreme Court, which is due to be heard on 9th October 2013.
