Dallas Buyers Club opens nationwide in the UK today. TheGayUK critic Roger Walker Dack gave a five star review for the movie which follows the life of Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) after he is diagnosed with HIV.
He finds that approved medication for the new condition (the film is set in 1985) is limited in the US, he starts a buyers club, whereby Woodroof imports medication from Mexico and sells the drugs to people with HIV for inflated profits.
Earlier in the week Jared Leto defended the right for any actor to play transgender roles. He was heckled by two women during the Virtuosos Awards at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Jared argued: ‘Because I’m a man, I don’t deserve to play that part?
‘So you want to hold a role against someone who happened to be gay or lesbian – they can’t play a straight part?’
When the woman countered:
‘Historically straight-gender people always play transgender people, and all of them received awards and credit for it.’
Jared replied:
‘Then you make sure that people that are gay, people that aren’t straight, people like the Rayons of the world, would never have the opportunity to turn the tables and explore parts of that art.’
